A new initiative aimed at boosting youth entrepreneurship in Zambia has officially kicked off, targeting 200 young business owners in Lusaka, Kitwe and Livingstone.
The Youth-Led MSME Empowerment Programme, launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Zambia in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, is designed to equip Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with the tools to grow, scale and compete in regional markets.
The programme, implemented by local innovation hub BongoHive, will provide training, mentorship, and access to funding. The ultimate goal: to turn promising youth-led businesses into serious players in Zambia’s economy and beyond.
“This is about more than just funding,” said a Ministry spokesperson at the launch. “It’s about giving our youth the skills, confidence and market access to grow sustainable businesses.”
What’s on Offer?
Participants will undergo a mix of virtual and in-person support, including:
- Training workshops in Lusaka, Kitwe and Livingstone
- Mentorship and business strategy support
- Pitch preparation for investment opportunities
- A regional pitch competition hosted by the Ministry in Lusaka
The top five businesses will win startup grants and be linked to investors and advanced mentorship to help fast-track their growth.
The programme also aims to help participants tap into new markets through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), positioning them for regional trade.
Driving Sustainable Development Through Entrepreneurship
The project aligns with Zambia’s national youth empowerment strategy and supports broader UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in job creation and economic inclusion.
“This is a game-changer for Zambia’s youth,” said UNDP Zambia. “By investing in the next generation of entrepreneurs, we are investing in the country’s future.”
Applications are now open for youth-led businesses that are ready to scale and make a meaningful impact.
