Vincent Odinga: From Selling Mangos to Establishing Veen Media

Vincent Odinga refused to let his unfortunate childhood experiences create a negative perception of life. As a huge sense of loss engulfed him when he endured the separation of his parents before being overwhelmed by the grief of losing his mother, he refused to give up.

In the face of such tragic circumstances, Vincent – who was born in the Kenyan coastal town of Kwale – picked himself up from the setbacks and decided to follow a passion for business that would eventually bring him success.

“It was during this time that the seeds of entrepreneurship were planted. With my siblings, we could sell ripened mangos in the nearest local market to make ends meet and contribute to our keep. We could take a basket full of ripe mangos to the market and a laundry list of items to buy, depending on the day’s sales,” recalls Vincent.

This was the beginning of an entrepreneurship journey that would eventually see him establishing Veen Media, a digital marketing company based in Nairobi.

“Veen Media offers content marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, digital brand positioning, and AI-powered marketing strategies. We also offer training programs on digital marketing, remote work strategies as well as branding excellence,” says Vincent.

“Our team consists of a core group of skilled professionals and a network of remote talent, ensuring that we bring the best expertise to every project. This diverse team structure allows us to remain flexible, tapping into a global pool of experts across different time zones to meet the needs of our clients efficiently,” he adds.

Tech Fascination

After high school, Vincent’s life took an unexpected turn when he joined the Comboni Missionaries Seminary with the desire to become a priest.

“Although I did not ultimately take holy orders, the experience within the seminary deeply impacted me. The structure, the discipline, and the philosophical underpinnings I gained there still influence my leadership style and approach to business today.

“When I left the seminary, I developed an interest in technology space, particularly business information technology, and was quickly drawn to the intersection of media, branding, and technology. I was initially fascinated by how brands could shape perception, make decisions, and leave a memorable impression.

“I started exploring digital marketing, content creation, and online brand development, realizing the immense opportunities the digital space offered. As I delved deeper, I identified a critical gap in the market. Many businesses and entrepreneurs struggled with brand visibility, digital positioning, and leveraging technology to scale.

“This gap was evident in the lack of effective digital marketing strategies and the underutilization of online platforms for brand development. This realization and my passion for technology and branding led me to establish Veen Media, a digital marketing agency, domiciled in Nairobi.”

Evolving Business Landscape

Vincent is well aware of how the digital business landscape has evolved at an unprecedented pace. When he started running Veen Media, his focus was entirely on traditional digital marketing – search engine optimization (SEO), blogging, and social marketing.

However, today the focus is shifting toward AI-powered content creation, automation, and hyper-personalization.

“To stay ahead in a highly competitive space, I’ve adopted a continuous learning mindset and incorporated AI and emerging technologies into our services. The digital space is evolving rapidly, with new platforms, tools, and strategies emerging practically daily.

“Staying at the forefront involves being proactive – constantly testing innovations, refining strategies and employing data-driven insights for optimized performance. Today, one must be willing to be both a practitioner and a student of the evolving digital ecosystem,” observes Vincent.

Notable Milestones

Vincent is excited about the milestones he has achieved with his company and believes they demonstrate the positive impact of strong entrepreneurship strategies.

“We have successfully worked with some African digital businesses through Veen Media to boost their online presence. Our services have traversed different sectors from fintech and e-commerce to education and healthcare, each requiring different branding and digital marketing strategies based on their respective requirements.

“Besides, our research firm has successfully led different phases of research projects, including data collection and report development for our clients with the highest satisfaction rates,” Vincent says.

‘Learn By Doing’

Asked about his advice to emerging entrepreneurs looking to find their feet in the business world, Vincent describes waiting for the perfect conditions as a futile mistake.

“Do not wait for perfect conditions since they never come. All successful businesses, innovations and breakthroughs started with a rough idea – a less-than-perfect version of what it would eventually be.

“Build a prototype, pilot your market, and iterate fast. Learning by doing is more valuable than any amount of planning; it lets you uncover your strong points, refine your weaknesses, and adjust to market demand in real-time. The key is to act, regardless of how tiny the first step is.

“Momentum is built with consistency, and victory follows the individuals who jump before they feel prepared. Failure is a learning opportunity, and each failure is a lesson that brings us closer to mastery. The world belongs to the doers who would do something about their ideas, learn from criticism, and refine their business models,” Vincent concludes.
