Ten trailblazing green startups from across Africa have been named as finalists in the 2025 Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) GreenPitch Challenge, a high-stakes competition aimed at accelerating climate-smart entrepreneurship on the continent.
Selected from over 200 early-stage and pre-growth phase applicants, the top 10 finalists will pitch their innovations to a panel of expert judges during a “shark tank-style” hybrid event scheduled for 4 September in Cape Town.
The in-person showcase is invite-only, but a virtual registration is open to the public. Representing a wide range of sectors from renewable energy to circular agriculture and water innovation these startups reflect a growing urgency and creativity in tackling Africa’s pressing climate and sustainability challenges.

Empowering Green Solutions
Kwezi Sogoni, Programme Manager for FNF South Africa, emphasized the potential of the top 10:
“We’re inspired by the vision and drive of this year’s top 10 finalists and proud to support them through the GreenPitch Challenge, together with our partners and investors, as they scale their solutions for a greener future.”
In preparation for the final pitch, RMB Ventures will host a readiness workshop designed to equip the startups with practical tools, industry insights, and investor engagement strategies.
“We look forward to once again supporting the finalists with the workshop designed to provide insight into the skills they will need to succeed as a start-up in South Africa,” said Ewan Gray, Private Equity Professional at RMB Ventures.
The GreenPitch Challenge, now in its third year, offers cash and in-kind prizes valued at over R300,000, including mentorship, funding opportunities, and access to investor networks.
“This year’s top 10 offer creative solutions across key green sectors. With a focus on water and circular waste innovation, we look forward to providing post-pitch funding and mentorship to help winners grow their impact,” said Nicola Redelinghuys, Knowledge Transfer Manager at Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa, a key prize sponsor.
A Platform for Africa’s Climate Entrepreneurs
As climate adaptation and green innovation become core pillars of Africa’s development agenda, platforms like the GreenPitch Challenge are becoming critical for enabling scalable, locally relevant solutions.
With sectors like sustainable agriculture, water management, clean energy, and circular economy dominating this year’s finalist list, the message is clear: Africa’s entrepreneurs are not just responding to the climate crisis they are leading the charge.
