Fashion designer Tinotenda Matayi, the creative force behind the popular Hatiperi brand, is steadily making his mark in the fashion world. Known as Hatiperi Wacho on the streets and across social media, Tinotenda’s unique apparel has resonated deeply with the youth, propelling him toward the top.

Founded in 2010, Hatiperi Official Private Limited is a self-made venture for Tinotenda, who is a self-taught designer. His love for fashion, combined with a passion for artistic expression, inspired him to create the Hatiperi brand—a name that has become synonymous with distinctive, high-quality clothing.

Located at Longcheng Plaza in Harare’s Central Business District, the Hatiperi store has become a popular destination for fashion enthusiasts. The shop has attracted a loyal following, including some of the country’s top musicians, who regularly visit to admire and purchase Tinotenda’s fashion-forward designs.

While the brand is known for its exceptional embroidery, sublimation, and print designs, Hatiperi Official caters to a diverse range of customers. The shop offers soccer jerseys, corporate wear, school uniforms, and plain t-shirts—items that have proven popular with everyday clients over the years. With 14 years of experience running his business, Tinotenda has demonstrated sharp entrepreneurial acumen.

Despite the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship, Tinotenda has remained resilient. He acknowledges that the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 were particularly difficult for his business, as they were for many others. However, he adapted by leveraging online sales and continued to believe in his vision.

To many young Zimbabweans and Africans navigating their own entrepreneurial journeys, Tinotenda has become a beacon of hope. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, persistence, and a strong work ethic—qualities that have allowed him to succeed even in Zimbabwe’s tough economic climate.

The Hatiperi brand’s association with well-known personalities has contributed to its growth. Over the years, Tinotenda has dressed several prominent musical artists, including Jah Prayzah, Mukudzei “Holy Ten” Chitsama, and Hillary “Hillzy” Ngaakudzwe Chipunza.

In a heartfelt post to his 182,000 Facebook followers, Tinotenda—using his street name Hatiperi Wacho—expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his journey.

“A township dream is all about building and elevating to spaces that we were denied access to before. Remember, the ‘building’ part is very important because you won’t have to ask anyone for access, but you will eat at a table you have prepared yourself. Build!” he shared.

He also extended his thanks to Jah Prayzah: “Biggest shout out to my brother Jah Prayzah for supporting Hatiperi Official Private Limited Company.”

As the Shona word ‘hatiperi’ suggests, Tinotenda’s relevance in both the Zimbabwean music and fashion scenes continues to endure. His journey is far from over, and the next chapter promises even greater accomplishments.
