Thelma Chimbganda’s journey is a testament to ingenuity, innovation, and steadfastness. Born and raised in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, a town known for its entrepreneurial spirit, she grew up surrounded by the determination and grit of her parents. Her father, a serial entrepreneur, dabbled in furniture manufacturing, transport, and education. Her mother, a schoolteacher, managed to hold the family together with remarkable grace. It was in this environment that Thelma first learned the value of hard work and resourcefulness.
“I saw my father start businesses that would sometimes fail, but he always got back up. From him, I learned the power of resilience and the courage to start over. My mother, on the other hand, taught me how to manage so much with so little. They both instilled in me a belief that anything is possible with the right mindset,” Thelma recalls.
Humble Beginnings, Big Dreams
Thelma’s entrepreneurial journey began early. “My first business was selling pies and burgers in my first year of university. Later, I taught myself how to bake by watching YouTube videos and started a cake business. I even ventured into pig farming and ran a mobile butchery,” she says with a laugh. Despite these efforts, financial hurdles forced her to drop out of university at 20. Undeterred, she studied for a professional CIMA course at 21 and earned her first degree in Banking and Finance by the age of 25.
“Professionally, I worked in Business Development, Marketing, and Public Relations, learning to stretch limited resources and solve problems creatively. These roles gave me a deep understanding of communication, stakeholder management, and execution—skills I carried into entrepreneurship,” added Thelma.
Her journey into logistics was born out of necessity and opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Together with my sister Michelle, we started Beyond Borders Logistics in our parents’ living room. We wanted to solve the logistical nightmares that small businesses were facing.
“MSMEs were often sidelined due to high costs and inefficiencies. MSMEs are the backbone of African economies, and without reliable logistics, their growth is stifled,” she explains.
“We began small, but the vision was big—streamline logistics, empower businesses, and drive growth.”
Building Beyond Borders Logistics
Founded in 2020, Beyond Borders Logistics is more than a company—it’s a lifeline for over 2,000 MSMEs. “Over 2,000 small businesses have benefited from our procurement and logistics solutions, enabling them to expand sustainably while keeping costs down.”
The business focuses on providing affordable, tech-driven logistics solutions for businesses of all sizes, making it easier for them to scale and compete. “It wasn’t just about moving goods from A to B—it was about creating opportunities for businesses to scale and compete on a larger stage.”
“The rise of e-commerce further inspired us to address last-mile delivery challenges. Under our TSOKA brand, we’ve brought smarter, more accessible delivery solutions to businesses and individuals, even in the most remote areas.” TSOKA International is a last mile delivery company that specializes in delivering packages and goods directly to customers’ doors, aiming to ensure speedy, convenient and efficient service. The company was founded in 2020 and currently operates in major metropolitan areas across Zimbabwe.
“Our goal has always been to empower trade, remove barriers, and make logistics a growth enabler for businesses across Africa,” said Thelma.
“From its humble beginnings, the company has achieved major milestones, including the consolidation of its 100th container—a feat Thelma proudly calls “a symbol of trust and growth.”
“Our tagline, ‘We keep delivering so that life can move forward,’ is not just a statement; it’s a promise. Every shipment we handle represents someone’s livelihood, someone’s dream. That responsibility drives us,” she says passionately.
Overcoming Challenges
Starting a logistics business in Zimbabwe’s tough economic environment wasn’t easy. Moving to a larger warehouse came with overwhelming costs, and finding skilled talent was a constant struggle. “Finding the right talent has also been an ongoing challenge. Logistics is a demanding industry, and it requires people who share your vision and drive.”
But Thelma embraced these challenges with a strategic mindset.
“When we faced financial pressure, we focused on scaling our most profitable services, particularly sea freight. It stabilized our cash flow and allowed us to manage growth. As for talent, we’ve learned to hire not just for skills but for alignment with our values and vision,” she shares.
To maintain a competitive edge, embracing technology has been crucial. “We’ve leveraged real-time tracking, cloud-based systems, and data analytics to deliver efficiency, transparency, and smarter decision-making,” explains the company’s leader. However, technology is only part of the equation. “It’s not just about the tools – it’s about understanding our customers’ needs,” they emphasize.
By taking the time to listen to clients, identify their pain points, and tailor solutions to meet their needs, the company has built strong relationships and delivered effective solutions. Additionally, collaboration has played a key role in driving innovation and adaptation. “Whether it’s strategic partnerships or working with forward-thinking suppliers, collaboration has allowed us to innovate, adapt, and remain competitive in an ever-changing market,” they note.
Her key takeaway? “Challenges are inevitable, but they also hold opportunities. If you stay focused, adaptable, and solution-driven, you’ll always come out stronger.”
Empowering Africa’s Future
Beyond logistics, Thelma is passionate about creating social impact. Through the Dignity for All initiative, she is addressing sanitary poverty for infants and the elderly. “Basic needs should not be a privilege. This project is about restoring dignity and improving quality of life for the most vulnerable,” she explains.
She also mentors young entrepreneurs and women, sharing lessons from her journey to inspire others. “I believe in empowering the next generation. If my story can help someone overcome their obstacles, then I’ve done my part,” she says.
A Vision for Africa
Thelma is optimistic about the future of African logistics. She is particularly excited about innovations like real-time tracking and smart delivery systems. “Technology is transforming our industry. It’s making logistics faster, more transparent, and more reliable. I’m excited about how these tools can unlock growth for African businesses,” she notes.
Currently, Beyond Borders Logistics is expanding into cross-border haulage to strengthen trade routes across the continent. “Our goal is to connect African markets more seamlessly, enabling businesses to access new opportunities with confidence,” she adds.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those looking to enter the logistics industry or start a business with limited resources, Thelma offers this advice: “Start small, but start smart. Focus on solving real problems, build trust with your clients, and leverage technology—even if it’s basic. And remember, consistency and resilience will take you far.”
“Leverage technology early, even if it’s basic. It will give you an edge in efficiency and customer service. And don’t underestimate the power of collaboration—find suppliers, partners, and mentors who can support your growth.
“Most importantly, stay consistent and resilient. Growth takes time, but with focus and hard work, it will come.”
Living Her Purpose
Today, at 36, Thelma reflects on her journey with gratitude. “I’ve been mantled for greatness. I’m at peace, surrounded by love, and driven by purpose. My story is proof that with resilience, determination, and a heart for service, you can turn even the smallest beginnings into something extraordinary,” she says. Through her work at Beyond Borders Logistics and beyond, Thelma Chimbganda is not just moving goods—she’s moving lives, breaking barriers, and building a brighter future for Africa.
