Against the backdrop of Namibia’s breathtaking landscapes, a remarkable journey unfolded – one that would take Risto Ashikoto from humble beginnings to extraordinary achievements. Born and raised in Namibia, Risto faced numerous challenges that tested his resolve. “I knew from a young age that challenges were just stepping stones. It’s all about how you face them,” Risto shares. And yet, it was in these moments of darkness that Risto discovered his greatest strength: the ability to transform obstacles into opportunities, and to turn adversity into advantage.

In 2012, he made the life-altering decision to resign from the Namibia Defense Force (NDF). What followed was a period of financial struggle, during which Risto, as the sole breadwinner for his family, was constantly seeking ways to provide. “It wasn’t easy, but I always told myself, ‘This is not where my story ends,’” he reflects.

By 2020, the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and Risto saw an opportunity to turn his circumstances around. Armed with a mere N$250 (about USD 13.10) and a vision, he founded Risto Trading Enterprises cc. “When I look back, it’s amazing how a small seed can grow into something big if you nurture it,” he says. This marked the beginning of a journey that would not only transform his life but also impact the lives of countless Namibians.

The Birth of NAMAloe Vera Products

The genesis of Risto’s company, NAMAloe Vera Products, was inspired by necessity and opportunity. Amid the pandemic, Risto recognized the abundance of aloe vera in Namibia and envisioned transforming it into a line of locally-produced cosmetics. “When others saw a plant, I saw potential,” he explains. “Aloe vera is a gift from nature, and I wanted to turn it into something that benefits our people.”

With dedication and ingenuity, he developed his first product, aptly named “NAMAloe Vera.” NAMAloe Vera Products specializes in natural, aloe vera-based skincare items designed to meet the unique needs of Namibians. Unlike imported cosmetics, Risto’s products are tailored to the local climate and skin types, offering affordable and effective alternatives. Operating out of Windhoek, the company has grown to become a symbol of innovation and resilience.

The journey was not without hurdles. Risto struggled with limited capital, an inadequate working environment, and stiff competition from established international brands. However, his resourcefulness, commitment to quality, and focus on educating the market about the benefits of his products helped him build a loyal customer base. “Namibian skin faces unique challenges, and I wanted to create solutions that resonate with our reality,” he says. Today, NAMAloe Vera Products is not just a business; it is a testament to Risto’s vision of creating jobs, uplifting communities, and promoting sustainable practices in Namibia.

The Loini Gwashimpulu Development Organic Farm Project

Risto’s entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond cosmetics. In a bid to address youth unemployment and promote sustainable agriculture, he is in the process of launching the Loini Gwashimpulu Development Organic Farm Project. Set in Oshendje village and the Onayena constituency of the Oshikoto region, the project aims to empower marginalized youth by providing hands-on agricultural training. “Agriculture is the backbone of our communities,” Risto asserts. “If we can empower our youth with these skills, we’re not just feeding families—we’re building futures.”

The farm’s vision encompasses organic farming, livestock rearing, and village tourism. Risto’s goal is to train 300 youth over the next decade, equipping them with skills in organic fertilizer production, vegetable cultivation, livestock farming, and fish farming. Additionally, the farm integrates cultural tourism by constructing Oshiwambo traditional rooms, offering visitors an authentic experience while generating income for the community. “It’s about more than farming,” he notes. “It’s about preserving our culture, protecting our environment, and creating opportunities.”

Plans for an agricultural academy are also in the pipeline, which will serve as a hub for ongoing education and innovation. To bring this vision to life, Risto is seeking funding. “With the right support, this project can transform rural Namibia,” he emphasizes. He aims to officially launch the project in May 2025, marking a significant milestone in his mission to drive social and economic transformation in rural Namibia.

Empowering Future Entrepreneurs

Throughout his journey, Risto has remained committed to sharing his knowledge and experiences with others. He has trained over 4,700 Namibians across eight regions, teaching them to produce natural cleaning products and encouraging them to start their own businesses. “Knowledge is power, but sharing it is even more powerful,” he says. His efforts have created a ripple effect, empowering individuals to achieve self-sufficiency and contribute to their communities.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Risto’s advice is simple yet profound: “Start where you are, with what you have. Don’t wait for perfect conditions—they rarely exist.” He emphasizes the importance of resourcefulness, perseverance, and a willingness to learn. By leveraging local resources and focusing on quality, he believes that anyone can create a meaningful impact, regardless of their starting point.

Achievements and Innovations

Risto expanded his product line to include environmentally-friendly detergents and items made from Kalahari melon seeds, such as tissue oils, salad dressings, and instant porridge. These innovations showcase Namibia’s natural resources and promote sustainable agriculture. “Our land is full of treasures waiting to be transformed,” he says proudly.

He has represented Namibia at international expos, including events in Ghana and India. “These platforms are not just about selling products—they’re about showing the world what Namibia has to offer,” he remarks. These platforms have not only elevated his business but also showcased Namibia’s potential in sustainable product manufacturing.

In 2023, Risto’s team won the “Best Young Innovation in Manufacturing” award at the BRICS Youth Summit in Pretoria, South Africa. “Winning this award was a humbling moment,” he reflects. “It showed me that the world is watching and that Namibia has a lot to offer.”

Risto Ashikoto’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community-focused entrepreneurship. From starting with N$250 to building a brand that empowers thousands, Risto has proven that challenges can be transformed into opportunities.

As he continues to expand his ventures, Risto remains a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs in Namibia and beyond. His commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community upliftment is not just shaping his legacy but also paving the way for a brighter future for Namibia.
