Tendekai Mawire, the chief executive officer of Amacon Civils, is a determined entrepreneur shaping his own success story in Zimbabwe’s construction sector.

Based in Harare, Amacon Civils Private Limited has become a preferred name in civil works and housing construction. The company is renowned for its innovative approach to solving infrastructure needs and delivering customized solutions to clients across Zimbabwe.

Amacon Civils has executed a wide range of projects, including water and sewer reticulation systems, road design and construction, building construction, and the supply of construction materials such as aggregates, precast concrete products, cement, gravel, and reinforcing steel. The company also hires out equipment and undertakes smaller projects like driveway paving, service station construction, perimeter wall installations, renovations, and painting.

Entrepreneurial Beginnings

Tendekai’s entrepreneurial journey began at an early age. Growing up, he was drawn to the idea of running a business. On his LinkedIn account, he recounts how, at the age of 10, he started cutting hair for family and community members using a cast-iron pair of scissors.

“I started cutting hair for my close family members using a cast iron scissors. I did it so well that friends and people in my community started coming for haircuts. Initially, I offered the service for free, but when demand grew, I decided to introduce a charge—equivalent to about $0.50 per haircut today,” Tendekai recalls.

This side hustle became a key focus throughout his secondary school years. By the time he reached Ordinary Level, Tendekai was giving 12 haircuts each weekend, often working until his hands hurt. His resourcefulness and willingness to address local needs laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial spirit.

Reflecting on these early experiences, Tendekai says:
“Businesses can often emerge from carrying out social responsibilities. Life presents opportunities, but it’s up to each individual to recognize and seize them. Even small resources, like a family scissors, can be the starting point for financial independence.”

Building Academic and Professional Foundations

Tendekai understood that education was essential to achieving his business goals. He pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the University of Zimbabwe, followed by a Master’s degree in Finance and Investment at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). He also holds a Chartered Secretary Diploma (ICSAZ) in Civil Engineering and a postgraduate diploma in Project Management.

With over a decade of experience in the construction industry, Tendekai has combined his academic expertise with practical knowledge to lead Amacon Civils.

Driving Amacon Civils’ Growth

Through Tendekai’s leadership, Amacon Civils has grown into a major player capable of handling large-scale projects, even under tight budgets. The company attributes its success to investments in skilled human capital, modern technology, and efficient operating systems that minimize costs while delivering projects within short timeframes.

“Our team’s commitment to quality assurance, a safe working environment, and strong ethics is at the heart of our success,” Tendekai explains.

Amacon Civils has developed a reputation for excellence in construction, thanks to its innovative solutions and dedication to meeting client needs. Tendekai believes the company’s growth is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and resilience.

A Vision for Zimbabwe’s Construction Sector

As a board member of the Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association, Tendekai recognizes the vital role local contractors play in national development.

“Local contractors are the heartbeat of our construction industry. Each brick laid and every plan executed is a testament to our resilience and innovation. Together, we are building not just structures but the foundations of a thriving Zimbabwe,” he says.

Tendekai also encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to stay focused on their goals.
“If you know what you want, go for it. Don’t be afraid. Nothing is impossible for a determined person. Success may take longer than anticipated, but with perseverance, it is achievable.”

A Story of Determination and Vision

From his humble beginnings as a village barber to leading one of Zimbabwe’s thriving construction companies, Tendekai Mawire exemplifies resilience and resourcefulness. His ability to recognize opportunities and turn them into success has propelled Amacon Civils to prominence in the construction sector.

By investing in people, embracing innovation, and maintaining a commitment to quality, Tendekai continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams and contribute to the growth and modernization of Zimbabwe.
