The Visionary Behind Shine for Change: Sheila Turyahabwe

At the heart of Shine for Change is its founder, Sheila Turyahabwe, whose journey is a testament to courage, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. Based in Kampala, Uganda, Sheila’s story began humbly in a university hostel, where a bold request for help from a hardworking neighbor set her on an unexpected path. This leap of faith led to her first job teaching at a nursery school—a role she secured by confidently asserting her ability to teach computers.

Sheila reflects, “At the interview, it was the phrase ‘I can teach computers’ that caught their attention. Of course, it wasn’t just about what I said; I had the skills to back it up.”

This initial experience illuminated the transformative power of digital skills and revealed the stark realities many communities face. Traveling for work, Sheila encountered schools without computers, teachers who lacked digital training, and children unable to keep pace with an increasingly digital world. Determined to address these gaps, Sheila founded Shine for Change to equip communities with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in the digital era.

“My story started in a university hostel, inspired by a neighbor whose hard work taught me to be bold,” Sheila recalls. “That courage led me to an unexpected opportunity, teaching at a nursery school. That job showed me how powerful digital skills are, but it also opened my eyes to a problem. While traveling later for work, I saw that many schools had no computers, teachers didn’t know how to use them, and children were falling behind in a world moving online. I knew I had to do something.”

Sheila’s biggest achievement has been creating a platform that enables communities to learn digital skills, granting them access to opportunities they could only dream of before. However, the journey has not been without its challenges. From limited resources to earning the trust of underserved communities, every obstacle has been a learning experience. Yet, moments like seeing a child use a computer for the first time reaffirm her mission and drive.

Her inspiration stems from two pivotal experiences: teaching computer skills as a first-year IT student and witnessing the lack of technological resources and literacy as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer. “The problem was clear: technology was there, but people didn’t have access or the skills to use it. That’s why I started Shine for Change—to give schools, children, and communities the tools and knowledge they need to succeed,” Sheila explains.

Sheila’s approach to leadership and innovation is rooted in a deep understanding of her community’s needs. She emphasizes the importance of solving real problems and staying connected to those she serves. Her strategies for overcoming challenges include starting small, building trust through action, and focusing on creating a lasting impact.

One of her proudest milestones is seeing the direct impact of Shine for Change’s initiatives. “We started by training five teachers, and all of them now work in better-paying jobs at competitive schools,” she shares. “We’ve also created over 20 ICT clubs in schools and helped more than 100 women in Uganda learn digital skills to do mobile banking, market their products, and access important information about farming and health.”

Looking ahead, Sheila is excited about emerging digital tools that bring life-changing opportunities to even the most remote areas. Shine for Change is expanding its digital literacy programs and planning ICT competitions to inspire the next generation of digital leaders. Beyond her work with the organization, Sheila is passionate about mentorship, encouraging young people to embrace leadership roles and make the most of every opportunity.

Reflecting on her journey, Sheila’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Start with what you have. Focus on solving real problems. Build relationships. And most importantly, do not disqualify yourself. The dream you have is there for a reason—don’t be the first person to doubt yourself.”

Shine for Change envisions a future where communities are not only consumers of technology but also creators and innovators, leveraging digital tools to address local challenges and create opportunities. By prioritizing education, economic empowerment, and sustainable development, the organization is laying the foundation for a brighter and more equitable future.
