The Early Days
Selamawit was born and raised in Ethiopia, a place she describes with warmth and unwavering pride. Her academic path led her to study Electrical Engineering, but it was her affinity for mathematics and an early opportunity to tutor fellow students at university that subtly redirected her trajectory.
“I loved math, but even more than that, I loved watching someone’s eyes light up when they finally understood a concept,” she recalls. “That’s when I realized, this isn’t just something I’m good at. It’s something I’m meant to do.”
Tutoring quickly became more than a side activity; it became her calling. Through every session, she saw the cracks in Ethiopia’s educational framework, bright students struggling to find consistent, quality academic support. That observation became a mission.
Building Fidel Tutorial
Recognizing a void in the education system, Selamawit founded Fidel Tutorial, a company designed to offer structured, accessible, and high-quality academic support across Ethiopia. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Fidel Tutorial provides personalized one-on-one tutoring across all subjects, in addition to test preparation, college application guidance, and language training.
“It was clear to me that the problem wasn’t that students weren’t capable. They just needed the right support, tailored to them,” she explains.
What began as a small venture has grown into a thriving enterprise with seven full-time staff, over 200 active tutors and a legacy of more than 5,000 students served. As of today, Fidel supports over 600 active learners and continues to expand its footprint across Ethiopia’s academic landscape.
Learning to Adapt
Navigating the evolving education industry hasn’t been without its challenges. While the broader landscape in Ethiopia is maturing, Selamawit notes that online learning adoption, particularly among younger students, has been gradual.
“We stay ahead by continuously learning- about education trends, student needs and effective teaching strategies. We focus on making learning practical, engaging and results-oriented.,” she says.
Her team prioritizes practical, engaging, results-oriented learning. Whether it’s incorporating digital tools or refining pedagogical strategies, the emphasis remains on keeping the student at the center.
The Trials Behind the Triumphs
Every entrepreneur faces hurdles, and Selamawit’s path has been no different. In fact, she credits many of her business philosophies to the hardships she endured while scaling Fidel Tutorial.
“Building a scalable business with limited resources and managing a large, mostly part-time team were major challenges,” she admits. But instead of breaking under pressure, she built systems. She learned to trust the process of continuous improvement, refined operational structures and, perhaps most importantly, learned patience.
“I had to accept that growth doesn’t always come quickly. But if it’s sustainable, it’s worth it.”

Among her proudest achievements isn’t a single product or milestone, it’s the thousands of students whose lives have changed through education.
“Our biggest success is the impact we’ve had-tutoring over 5,000 students and supporting 600+ active learners today. We’ve grown through strategic partnerships and an unwavering focus on quality, adaptability and student-centered learning.”
In addition to tutoring services, Fidel has introduced exam preparation boot camps, language proficiency programs, adult education, and college-readiness workshops. Each offering reflects her belief in lifelong, personalized learning.

“These tools can make learning more intuitive, more effective and more inclusive,” she explains. “That’s the future I want to be part of.”
Upcoming initiatives include new tutoring centers, programs for special needs students, and language classes tailored to the diaspora. She’s also launching an adult literacy campaign aimed at bridging generational education gaps. “We’re expanding with new tutoring centers, programs for special needs education, diaspora-focused language classes and adult literacy initiatives.”
