Rueda Wine Co. Sets New Wine Industry Standard

Cape Town’s wine scene has found a new steward in Fernando Rueda, Managing Director of RWC Wines, better known as Rueda Wine Co. He brings a calculated blend of financial acuity and cultural finesse to an industry ripe for disruption.

“I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, and have always had a deep interest in culture and craftsmanship. Values that later found a home in the world of wine,” Fernando recalls.

Fernando’s credentials read like a balance sheet of ambition: a Bachelor of Business Science in Finance with Accounting from the University of Cape Town, a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA), a passed CA(SA) board exam, and CFA Level 1 clearance. He began at Ernst & Young, but in August 2022 left to lead Rueda full-time.

A Strategic Vision Rooted in Values

Founded in October 2020, Rueda Wine Co. was born out of Fernando’s intent “to address several opportunities I saw in the South African wine landscape” particularly in improving access to cellar-worthy wine inclusively.

“I was driven by a desire to bring exceptional wines to South Africa. Wines with soul, passion, and a deep sense of place and to help guide the consumer in an unpretentious, welcoming, and easy-to-understand manner,” he reflects.

“At the time, access to many of the world’s most exciting producers was limited locally.”

Rather than being a vanilla importer, Fernando envisioned a business “rooted in storytelling, provenance and trust,” one that honors both producer and consumer through intentional curation.

Founder, Leader and Brand Custodian

In his dual role as Founder and Managing Director, Fernando wears many hats: strategic lead, financial overseer, partnership builder and curator of the portfolio. Over three years, the team has grown from 1 to 15 people, expanding to serve new markets.

“My role is broad, but at its core, I’m responsible for the strategic direction of the business, financial performance, and managing key partnerships.”

He remains hands-on, working directly with private collectors, trade clients and onboarding new artisanal winemakers.

Coalescing Logistics, Education and Brand Development

Rueda Wine Co. is a specialist importer and distributor focused on “natural, artisanal and heritage producers” from France, Italy, and South Africa representing over 90 producers.

“On a day-to-day basis, our work extends far beyond logistics; it’s about building deep client relationships, storing wines under optimal conditions, educating our audience and cultivating long-term brand development,” Fernando reveals.

The company sells to private collectors, restaurants, wine bars and retailers. In partnership with Aspire Art, it offers wine brokerage and auction services, enabling clients to buy, cellar and eventually monetize their wine assets.

Overcoming Pandemic and Growth Challenges

Starting a luxury importer during COVID-19 was no easy feat. Shipping disruptions, shifting consumer behaviours and trading restrictions tested the team’s resolve.

“It was about running with the idea and making it work, day by day, solving problems as they arose, and remaining flexible and adaptable,” Fernando asserts.

More recently, volatility in foreign exchange, import regulations and scaling logistics posed further hurdles. Fernando credits resilience to strong systems, a dedicated team and steadfast client support.

Rapid Growth and Strategic Innovations

Less than five years old, Rueda Wine Co. is now among South Africa’s leading fine wine importers. Fernando reports continued 100% year-on-year growth, modern storage facilities, a premier fine wine auction platform and a producer financing mechanism to uplift the winemakers they represent.

“We’ve sustained 100% year‑on‑year growth since inception, built state‑of‑the‑art storage facilities, launched South Africa’s premier fine wine auction platform… and developed a producer financing platform.”

The company employs 15 people across sales, logistics, finance, marketing and operations, but plans to expand:

“We’re actively looking to expand our team… developing a flagship physical retail and wine bar space in Cape Town,” says Fernando.

Over the next five years, Rueda aims to:

  • Launch a flagship wine bar and retail outlet in Cape Town.
  • Expand into Gauteng and KwaZulu‑Natal.
  • Deepen partnerships with global producers.
  • Grow private client and brokerage services.
  • Promote wine as a long-term investment via education, storage, and collecting.
  • Expand the producer support platform, providing financing and storytelling tools.

A New Benchmark in South African Wine Entrepreneurship

In Fernando’s own words, the mission is clear:

“Our goal is to continually set new benchmarks for fine wine distribution and narrative‑driven brand building in South Africa.”

At the intersection of elegant storytelling and rigorous business discipline, Rueda Wine Co. offers a compelling template for impact-led entrepreneurship delivering not just wine, but long-term cultural and economic value.
