Peserverance Muzeya is a visionary entrepreneur and CEO of Alzanael Group. She began her journey in a small rural community in Guruve, where she grew up surrounded by agriculture. “From a young age, I witnessed the hard work and dedication of local farmers, including my family, who relied on the land for their livelihoods,” Muzeya recalls.
This upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for the agricultural sector and its potential to uplift communities. Muzeya started her journey as a smallholder farmer, eager to contribute to her community. However, in 2019, she faced a significant challenge when she struggled to secure a market for her fresh produce.
Instead of being discouraged, Muzeya was motivated to make a change. “I recognized that by facilitating market access, I could help my peers increase their income and reduce poverty in our community,” she explains. This initiative not only empowered her but also created a support network among local farmers, fostering collaboration and resilience.
Key Milestones in Her Journey to Success
One of Muzeya’s most notable successes is the establishment of Alzanael Delights as a branded product through ZIPO and ARIPO. This not only increased income for local farmers but also provided consumers with access to nutritious, healthy processed farm produce. “Within the year, we increased our income through higher sales, which also boosted the income of the farmers we work with by an average of 30%,” Muzeya notes.
The company’s women empowerment program has also had a profound impact, with over 500 women participating in training workshops on sustainable farming practices, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. “Many participants have since started their own small businesses, contributing to local economic growth and enhancing their families’ quality of life,” Muzeya says.
Muzeya’s commitment to sustainability is evident in her efforts to reduce food waste in local farming communities. “I initiated a project aimed at educating farmers about waste reduction strategies using locally available resources,” she explains. Through workshops on food preservation techniques and the dehydration of surplus food, Muzeya’s project successfully reduced food waste by 40%.
Muzeya’s collaboration with international organizations and agronomists has also introduced sustainable farming practices to local farmers. “We’ve introduced regenerative agriculture, agroecology, and permaculture to local farmers,” she notes. Through training sessions and linkages with suppliers of organic seeds, farmers have reported improved soil health and increased yields, leading to greater food security in the communities.
Persevering Through Adversity
However, Muzeya’s journey as an entrepreneur has not been without its challenges. She has faced obstacles in securing market access. “Market access challenges were a major hurdle for me,” Muzeya recalls. “I struggled to connect with consumers and establish distribution channels.”
In addition to market access challenges, Muzeya has also faced financial constraints. “Securing funding was a major hurdle for me,” she notes. “Limited financial resources made it difficult to invest in necessary infrastructure and marketing efforts.”
As a leader, Muzeya prioritizes creating a culture of adaptability within her team, encouraging open communication and collaboration. “I believe in fostering an environment where team members feel empowered to share ideas and feedback, leading to innovative solutions and strengthening collective resilience,” she emphasizes.
Muzeya’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start small, scale gradually, and leverage community resources. “Tap into local resources such as agricultural cooperatives, NGOs, and community organizations,” she recommends. “Collaborating with others can help you share resources and reduce costs.”
She also emphasizes the importance of embracing innovation and technology, focusing on sustainable practices, and building strong relationships with stakeholders. “Utilize affordable technology and tools to enhance efficiency and productivity,” Muzeya suggests. “Focus on sustainable practices that not only reduce your environmental footprint but also enhance your brand reputation and appeal to conscious consumers.”
Muzeya’s commitment to sustainability is evident in Alzanael Group’s operations. The company has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting eco-friendly practices. “We believe that sustainability is not only a moral imperative but also a business opportunity,” Muzeya notes.
