Tanzania is building a new generation of climate innovators with the Adaptation and Resilience ClimAccelerator. Designed to help startups scale solutions that protect communities, livelihoods and ecosystems, the program combines mentorship, funding and access to global networks. For early-stage ventures, this initiative offers more than support, it provides the tools and real-world testing opportunities needed to turn innovative ideas into tangible solutions that create measurable social and environmental impact. By focusing on local challenges, the ClimAccelerator ensures that Tanzanian startups are not only contributing to the global fight against climate change but also delivering meaningful benefits for the people most affected.

Powered by Climate-KIC, Europe’s leading climate innovation agency and run locally in collaboration with SmartLab with funding from Irish Aid, the ClimAccelerator brings international expertise to Tanzania’s climate innovation landscape. Climate-KIC has a proven track record of accelerating ventures that drive the transition to a zero-carbon. In Tanzania, the program focuses on supporting startups that address real climate challenges in local communities, particularly in rural areas where the impacts of climate change are felt most acutely.

Expert Support and Tailored Mentorship for Startups

The ClimAccelerator is structured to provide a tailored, expert-led journey for participating startups. From the moment of application, startups are guided through a series of carefully designed phases aimed at building capacity, validating solutions and increasing impact. The first phase, taking place from September to October 2025, involves application and selection. Startups apply through the program’s website, after which the accelerator team screens candidates for eligibility and fit. Shortlisted startups are invited for interviews, with the top-performing applicants joining the program.

Phase two, running from November to December 2025, focuses on due diligence and climate impact assessment. Selected startups undergo thorough evaluation to ensure their solutions are feasible and truly address climate challenges. Participants also receive leadership training to enhance decision-making, strategic planning and team management skills. This phase ensures that startups are equipped not only with ideas but also with the capacity to implement them effectively.

The acceleration phase, from January to March 2026, provides intensive training, one-to-one mentorship, peer learning opportunities and grant funding. Startups are supported to test their solutions in real-world contexts, ensuring they can deliver measurable benefits for people and the environment. The program culminates in an expo where startups showcase their validated solutions to investors, partners and stakeholders. This final phase creates networking opportunities, funding connections and clear pathways for scaling.

Participants in the ClimAccelerator benefit from guidance in refining business models, overcoming climate-specific challenges and developing solutions that are both sustainable and commercially viable. The program emphasizes peer learning and collaboration, enabling startups to learn from one another while gaining insights from experienced mentors who understand the intersection of climate innovation and entrepreneurship. Access to a global climate innovation network further allows startups to explore international partnerships and funding opportunities, amplifying their impact.

Fostering Solutions That Protect Communities and the Environment

ClimAccelerator focuses on adaptation and resilience innovations, solutions that help people, communities and ecosystems cope with climate change. Unlike mitigation, which aims to reduce emissions at their source, adaptation and resilience focus on preparing for, adjusting to and recovering from climate impacts such as floods, droughts, storms and heatwaves. By supporting adaptation, the program helps communities stay strong, flexible and capable of thriving despite environmental shocks.

The types of solutions supported by the program are broad and practical. Startups working in sustainable agriculture and food systems can strengthen food security through drought-tolerant crops, post-harvest storage innovations, nutrition-sensitive practices, regenerative farming techniques and mobile platforms that connect farmers to markets and advisory services. Water management solutions, including rainwater harvesting, filtration systems, climate-smart irrigation and community-led watershed restoration, are critical to ensuring reliable and equitable access to this essential resource.

Renewable energy solutions that support climate adaptation are another key focus area. Solar-powered cold chains for food and medicine, off-grid energy solutions for schools and clinics, microgrids for remote communities and energy access for climate-smart agriculture are all examples of innovations that increase resilience. Additionally, smart land use and agroforestry solutions protect ecosystems while supporting livelihoods through reforestation, sustainable grazing and land restoration informed by indigenous knowledge. Urban greening and climate-smart land management also help reduce heat stress and flood risk.

The ClimAccelerator also encourages innovation in early warning and climate information systems. Tools such as SMS-based alerts, community monitoring networks, climate dashboards for farmers, risk mapping applications and educational campaigns empower communities with timely, actionable information. Waste and circular economy solutions linked to adaptation outcomes, such as composting, repurposing materials, waste-to-energy systems and circular textiles, help reduce environmental strain while building resilience. These solutions demonstrate that climate adaptation can intersect with economic opportunity, supporting both people and the planet.

The program specifically targets startups that are legally registered in Tanzania, address climate-related challenges locally and have moved past the MVP stage. Startups must demonstrate potential to grow and create measurable social, environmental and economic impact. A dedicated, coachable team with diverse skills and strong founder commitment is essential, as is active participation throughout the program. By setting these standards, the ClimAccelerator ensures that supported ventures are well-positioned to succeed and scale.

The impact of the program extends beyond individual startups. By fostering innovation in adaptation and resilience, the ClimAccelerator contributes to broader efforts to safeguard communities and strengthen Tanzania’s capacity to respond to climate shocks. Entrepreneurs participating in the program gain knowledge, networks and credibility that help them attract investment, create jobs and deliver solutions that protect people and ecosystems. By emphasizing measurable impact, collaboration and real-world testing, the program builds a foundation for lasting change.

The Adaptation and Resilience ClimAccelerator in Tanzania represents a major step forward for climate-focused entrepreneurship. By combining expert mentorship, funding, peer learning and access to a global innovation network, the program empowers startups to develop solutions that meet the urgent challenges of climate change. From sustainable agriculture and water management to renewable energy, land use and climate information systems, the program supports innovations that directly improve lives, strengthen resilience and protect the environment.

Startups, mentors, investors and funders are invited to join this growing ecosystem of climate innovation. For startups, the program offers a structured path to refine their solutions, demonstrate impact and connect with partners and funders who can help them scale. For mentors and investors, it provides a platform to engage with high-potential ventures tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Together, the ClimAccelerator creates a collaborative, results-driven environment where ideas become action and innovation drives adaptation.

Applications are now open for the 2025 program. Early-stage startups in Tanzania with bold, locally-informed solutions to climate challenges are encouraged to apply and become part of a program that not only strengthens businesses but also creates meaningful change for communities, livelihoods and the environment. By joining the ClimAccelerator, startups gain the tools, knowledge and connections to thrive while contributing to a more resilient, climate-ready future for Tanzania.
