Muhle Ndwalane: Designing the Future of African Digital Business

Muhle Ndwalane is the founder and managing director of Asante Tech Solutions, a South African digital agency driving data-led marketing, strategic brand engineering and business transformation. With operations based in Durban and an expanding footprint in Johannesburg, Ndwalane is positioning Asante as a competitive force in the continent’s creative and tech industries. His work sits at the intersection of design, technology, and entrepreneurship, underpinned by a clear commitment to sustainable impact and inclusive digital growth.

And yet, for all the accolades and forward momentum, he speaks not with bravado but with a grounded clarity that is rare in today’s fast-talking world of tech entrepreneurs.

“It’s not a sad story, but my upbringing is not from a rich family,” he says. “I’m lucky to be the last born and started getting the benefits when my family was moving out of the poverty phase.”

That’s where the story begins but it’s certainly not where it ends.

Early Seeds

From a young age, Muhle was immersed in environments that sharpened his perspective on success and social mobility. He attended boarding school, which exposed him to peers from across the economic spectrum. This experience seeded a powerful belief that still guides him.

“The top key thing I learned is that you are only as good as what you can bring to the table,” he says. “It doesn’t matter what background you come from or what advantage you have. As long as you put in the work and respect the people around you, things will work out.”

It was at this pivotal stage that soccer became more than just a sport. When his parents could no longer afford boarding school fees, a scholarship linked to his soccer talent helped carry him through. That opportunity, he says, helped him develop discipline and perhaps more importantly, resilience.

His university years in Westville, Durban, saw a redirection from his initial dreams of studying computer science into Information Systems and Technology. What seemed like a detour became a defining pivot.

“My math wasn’t that good,” he admits, “so I got redirected to information systems and technology. I think it was the best redirection I’ve ever had in my life. I would have regretted everything if I had taken computer science.”

That redirection offered him a powerful dual lens: technology and business, a fusion that would later become central to Asante Tech Solutions.

Entrepreneurship by Design, Not Accident

Muhle’s entrepreneurial spark ignited during high school, not in a lecture hall, but in a cottage where he stayed after his parents could no longer fund the boarding house. There, a housemate who sold meat inspired him to think creatively about selling what he could make with his hands and mind.

“She encouraged us to sell things we could design. I like designs,” he recalls. “So I started creating branded T-shirts, hoodies, stuff like that.”

University brought refinement. He pursued visual communication studies to hone his understanding of design and branding. But it was his deep involvement in a non-profit organization focused on social entrepreneurship that shaped his leadership approach. He eventually rose to become Executive President of that organization, a position that would anchor his values in community, empowerment and sustainability.

That same philosophy birthed Asante Tech Solutions, a company whose roots lie in a passion for digital media and creative expression.

“I’m not an artist when it comes to paper,” he explains. “But I knew I could create anything using a computer. I wanted to express my art in digital form.”

The Rise of Asante Tech Solutions

Though he started experimenting with digital design work during university, it wasn’t until 2019 that Asante was formally incorporated. For a while, it remained a side hustle, until 2021, when Muhle took the full leap.

“That’s when the business really started taking shape. We had employees. I was experiencing being a manager,” he says. “It was an unpredictable time. A lot of our clients didn’t know how to navigate COVID-19. We helped them reimagine how to communicate with their audiences.”

His early advantage? A deeper familiarity with the digital world than many of his clients. That knowledge became currency.

“They weren’t sure what was going to happen and I wasn’t sure either,” he laughs. “But I knew the digital space better than they did. So I built confidence, delivered and they started trusting our ideas.”

Today, Asante is headquartered in Durban, with a fast-growing presence in Johannesburg. With a team of 14, the agency has carved a reputation for marrying cutting-edge creativity with data-driven strategy. From branding and marketing to analytics and CRM systems, Asante helps clients unlock digital transformation with a uniquely African perspective.

“The more things change, the more we have a responsibility to help our clients navigate those changes,” he says. “The world is no longer just about survival. It’s about growth.”

And with that growth comes innovation. From basic defensive marketing strategies, Asante now tackles questions around expansion, AI integration, and long-term value creation. It’s no longer just about staying relevant, it’s about leading the charge.

“We moved from just wiring to growing,” he says. “Every strategy we develop now is centered around one thing – growing our clients’ businesses.”

Hard Lessons and Harder Truths

But success hasn’t come without scars. Muhle is candid about his two greatest challenges: trusting too easily and navigating financial illiteracy.

“I believe a lot in people,” he says. “But people can take advantage of the love you express to them. I’ve experienced setbacks because of that.”

On the financial side, he’s learned tough lessons about the importance of smart capital structuring.

“If we had been financially smarter earlier, we would’ve made better decisions,” he reflects. “Our growth came from grit not capital. But we’re learning.”

Impact Beyond the Bottom Line

One of his proudest accomplishments is building proprietary tech. Unlike many agencies, Asante owns the platforms it uses. Their Asante Power CRM system is an all-in-one sales and marketing tool that delivers integrated value to clients.

But if there’s one symbol of public validation that stands out, it’s his appearance in Forbes Africa.

“It holds a lot of weight,” he says. “It’s not an easy one. It’s prestigious.”

Still, he remains grounded. Beyond Asante, he continues to support the non-profit organization that shaped his early leadership and is involved in an upcoming financial modeling initiative that will improve access to capital for underserved communities.

Muhle’s message to budding founders is simple but profound.

“Make sure you learn as much as you possibly can,” he says. “The only way through is through. You only learn the lesson once you go through it.”

The Age of AI and Intention

Muhle is energized by the rise of artificial intelligence and its transformative potential.

“Our productivity has grown significantly,” he says. “We’re doing more with less. And it’s only the beginning.”

But through all the trends and tech, he holds one lesson above all.

“What’s important in business is the person’s life,” he says. “If you can define your life properly, everything else crystallizes. We don’t do things for the sake of it. We do them to achieve our bottom line.”

Muhle Ndawane began with designs on T-shirts. Today, he’s designing the future of digital transformation in Africa.

And he’s only getting started.
