More than a decade ago, Mabothe Mojapelo travelled from South Africa to London to work for an audit firm. Eager to make sure the skills she acquired abroad would benefit her country, she made the decision to return back home.
Later, after working for different South African companies from 2012 following her return, Mabothe was only presented with an opportunity to fully showcase the skills she had learned in Europe ten years later.
“I had the opportunity to work in London on a short-term secondment, which was later extended to a couple of years. I embraced this opportunity as it allowed me to grow both professionally and personally.
“In 2012, I returned home and transitioned into different roles, first in another auditing firm and later in the insurance sector. In October 2022, I joined Makosi as the Talent and People Manager for the audit business. Since then, my role has expanded significantly, challenging and stretching me in exciting ways,” she explains.

Keeping Everyone Connected
Mabothe explains – with excitement – her role at Makosi, which revolves around linking people from different areas around the world.
“I oversee our People function, supporting our people across the globe. Since we operate in a virtual environment, my team and I focus on keeping our people connected through culture and the experiences we co-create every day.
“We aim to enhance those experiences to foster personal and professional growth. What gets me out of bed in the morning, clichéd as it may sound, is the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s experience at Makosi.”
Her role sees her supporting a global core team of more than 350 employees and a network of over 8 000 fully vetted South African Chartered Accountants.
“Work is a big part of our lives, and if I can help make someone’s time with us meaningful and impactful, then that is definitely a win!
“I am responsible for developing and implementing people strategies that align with our business needs. I work closely with the leadership and my team to ensure we attract, develop as well as retain top talent while balancing compliance and operational efficiencies.”
Rising Above Challenges
Like many businesses in the auditing industry, Makosi also faces many challenges as they seek to meet the ever-changing demands of the profession.
“We navigate the evolving demands of the accounting profession. Client needs are constantly shifting, competition is fierce, and the war for talent is ongoing,” explains Mabothe.
However, the mentality that ascribes to the belief that for every challenge there is a solution helps them to constantly think outside the box.
“We tackle these challenges by staying agile, continuously refining our approach to talent acquisition and development, as well as ensuring that we always deliver differentiated value to both our clients and our people.”
Embracing Achievements
Makosi has established themselves as a formidable brand for their clients as well as an employer of choice for talent in the professional services industry by consistently delivering exceptional talent solutions to clients.
Mabothe explains how Makosi’s milestones are creating a legacy likely to be felt by many more generations to follow.
“Regarding talent, I often ask someone, Why Makosi? And I am always amazed at what we have built as a collective—the lasting impact we have created, even for those who are no longer with us.
“A testament to this is that many of our hires come through word of mouth and referrals. This speaks to the strength of our culture, the depth of our impact, and the meaningful experiences we create for our people, both during their time with us and beyond.”
Goals and Aspirations
In the coming five years, Makosi is committed to continue expanding their footprint while maintaining their status as an industry leader.
“We are focused on expanding our service lines and global footprint, diversifying our offerings, and continuing to evolve with the profession to meet client needs effectively.
“From short-term projects to long-term engagements, virtual or on-site, Makosi is the agile partner firms need to eliminate resourcing headaches, boost efficiency, and focus on creating value for their clients,” Mabothe concludes.
