In the fast-paced and ever-evolving landscape of the media industry, Mariam Mendy’s name has become synonymous with innovation and a fierce commitment to storytelling. A journalist, writer, TV host, producer, digital content creator, and entrepreneur, Mendy has shaped the vision and trajectory of Uncut Media Kenya—a company born out of her desire for independence, creativity, and a passion for meaningful content.

Uncut Media Kenya focuses on creating and distributing high-quality digital content while offering services such as advertising, photography, video production, and event planning.

A Journey of Independence and Creation

Mendy’s entrepreneurial path was born from her determination to break free from the constraints of traditional employment. “The inspiration came from my desire to be an independent creator, to have the ability to create without limitations or consulting—just the freedom of it—and also to make a difference,” she reflects. The seeds of Uncut Media Kenya were sown during a year-long internship at a local TV station, where she realized that her vast reservoir of ideas was too big to be contained by someone else’s vision.

“The thought of seeking employment seemed daunting at the time, and I realized I had all these ideas in my head—so why not start something that I could run and control myself?” she says. That’s when the idea of starting her own venture began to take shape—one that would give her the freedom to create and control content without compromise.

However, the path to launching Uncut Media was far from smooth. Fear, uncertainty, and the daunting challenge of raising capital were the first obstacles Mendy faced. The world of media production, especially for a fresh entrepreneur, required significant investment in equipment, and the costs were astronomical. “Fear, capital, uncertainty—I didn’t know how people would receive my content. It’s different in a way. Also, I needed equipment—cameras, mics, lights, the works—very expensive, plus a studio and websites,” she confesses.

Yet, with every hurdle, Mendy found the courage to push forward, driven by her belief in her unique vision. Through strategic networking, using every opportunity to learn and grow, and tapping into the support of friends and mentors, she began to build the foundation of her business. In 2021, the company was launched.

The Evolving Landscape of African Film and Media

As Uncut Media Kenya grew, so did the entire media industry across Africa. Mendy’s vision didn’t just align with the digital transformation happening globally; it was also in tune with the larger cultural and economic shifts taking place on the continent. The African film and media industry, once limited by access to technology and funding, has flourished in recent years. Government support, the rise of streaming platforms such as Netflix and Showmax, and an increased global interest in African stories have propelled the continent’s filmmakers and content creators to new heights.

“Films are becoming more visible on the international stage. There’s greater cross-cultural exchange, and African stories are reaching new audiences,” Mendy observes. Despite challenges such as piracy, limited funding, and varying access to technology, the future of African media is undeniably bright. “The future is bright; more young filmmakers are getting involved.”

A Vision Realized, But Still Evolving

Mendy’s vision for Uncut Media has evolved significantly since its inception. What began as an ambition to offer a comprehensive suite of digital services—ranging from radio to news publishing, PR, and video production—has transformed into a more focused, cohesive strategy. Reflecting on her early days, she admits, “I thought I had it all figured out. I wanted to do everything digital—radio, which I have with Vipi Radio and Uncut Radio, plus the two news websites, Uncut and Vipi. I wanted to have everything under one roof—video production, PR—everything media-related. But I soon realized that was too much, too fast. There was a lot I didn’t know.”

What followed was a period of rapid growth, experimentation, and refinement. Uncut Media expanded its reach through digital platforms such as Vipi Radio and Uncut Radio, launched news websites, and began forging partnerships with brands, artists, and filmmakers.

“We were everywhere—on social media, in the press, through interviews, and networking events. My friends in the media space were instrumental in spreading the word about the company. Plus, research and reading a lot—I read everything, everywhere,” she says.

Mendy also embraced the importance of her team, marketing, social media outreach, and producing content of the highest quality. A perfectionist at heart, she offers her audience professional, polished media productions that stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace. The result? Uncut Media grew in prominence and credibility, cementing its position as a key player in Kenya’s digital and media industry.

Milestones and Expanding Horizons

As Uncut Media gained momentum, Mendy’s original dream of diversifying the business into various facets of the media industry began to come true. What started as a passion project in news and radio production expanded into public relations, photography, video production, and even film.

One of the company’s proudest achievements is its growing role in promoting local content on the international stage. Whether through partnerships with artists or working with global streaming platforms, Uncut Media has contributed significantly to showcasing African talent. Mendy is particularly excited about the future of African film. “We hope to do more in film, which is something I’m really passionate about—telling raw, African stories to the world.”

Like any entrepreneur, Mendy faces an array of challenges. From managing a fast-evolving digital space, where trends and competition change constantly, to the high costs of professional production, the pressure never relents. But for Mendy, the key to navigating these challenges is staying connected to her team, friends, and mentors, who provide perspective and guidance. “Decisions are hard to make sometimes. I listen to my team, my closest friends, and my mentors. I say, get yourself a person you really trust,” she explains.

“The digital space is changing fast—trends and competition. The cost of production is high, especially if you want everything done professionally. Doing something different might work or not, so I’m never sure.”

Despite the obstacles, Mendy remains passionate and driven by the impact her work can have on the media landscape. “I read a lot of material—books, international publications—and so much so that I’m in the loop and know what’s going on at all times. I really love the rush, the people, the stories, the news—everything. I can’t see myself doing anything else,” she says with conviction.

As Uncut Media continues to evolve and expand, Mendy’s goal is to grow the company, tell more stories, and showcase African talent globally. With her relentless drive and a team that shares her passion for excellence, Uncut Media is poised to leave an indelible mark on the African media industry.
