In the sprawling city of Dar es Salaam, where over five million people hustle to carve out a living, hope often comes at a cost. Illegal dumpsites fester like wounds, and the scarcity of clean water forces residents to rely on plastic-packaged alternatives. Amid this urban disharmony, a lone warrior has risen—not clad in armor, but armed with resolve. Her name is Liberatha Kawamala, and she dares to dream not only of a cleaner Tanzania but a greener Earth.

As she shares her story, her grounded humility and soaring vision shine through. “I am self-driven and committed to solving the problem of plastic waste in Tanzania through innovations in waste management and green business,” she says. Her journey reveals a tapestry of courage, creativity, and relentless determination. Raised amidst the vibrancy of Dar es Salaam, Liberatha saw what many ignored: the menace of plastic waste and the untapped potential hidden within it.

The Birth of Libe Green Innovation

In 2018, while still a student at the National Institute of Transport, Liberatha took her first steps toward creating Libe Green Innovation. Her inspiration was born not out of grand ambition, but out of necessity. At home, empty plastic bottles piled up with no clear purpose. She began crafting women’s accessories and decorations from discarded items—an idea that sparked curiosity but struggled to find a sustainable business model.

“The idea was good for creating awareness, but it wasn’t good for business. I then received support from different people on how I could develop and shape the idea into a viable business,” she reflects with gratitude. From these humble beginnings emerged a social enterprise that now serves as a beacon of hope for East Africa.

Innovation Rooted in Community

As CEO, Liberatha wields innovation like a machete clearing a dense thicket. Libe Green Innovation employs cutting-edge technology, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, to organize waste pickers and allocate collection centers.

“GIS revolutionizes waste management by mapping and optimizing collection routes, analyzing waste generation patterns, and enabling efficient recycling and resource recovery,” she explains. “We engage communities at the local level, training them on waste segregation and recycling. We partner with local stakeholders to drive change within these communities.”

By marrying technology with grassroots action, Liberatha has created a model that is as inclusive as it is effective. Her work has empowered marginalized groups, transforming waste into economic opportunity.

The Road Paved with Challenges

The path has not been smooth. Financial crises, market inflation, and even power shortages have tested her resilience.

“Being a female founder comes with its own set of challenges,” she admits. Yet, with a committed team and a spirit of perseverance, she has turned obstacles into stepping stones.

Scaling her initiatives presents unique hurdles. Accessing funding, entering new markets, and securing partnerships require not just strategy but trust and collaboration. “We need genuine people to guide and help us. Also, skills and market access are critical,” she emphasizes.

A Vision for a Circular Economy in Africa

Liberatha’s vision extends far beyond Tanzania. As an advocate for circular economies, she reimagines waste not as a problem but as a resource.

Libe Green Innovation is empowering marginalized communities through sustainable waste management, transforming waste into opportunities while fostering economic inclusion and environmental sustainability.

“We train communities on waste segregation and recycling while partnering with local stakeholders to amplify impact. Many youths have been inspired and are eager to learn through our training programs in collaboration with NGO partners,” she shares.

Her leadership has earned her recognition from organizations such as the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the United Nations Development Program.

“The awards and recognition have exposed me to many platforms and opened doors to opportunities for growing my business and connecting with like-minded people worldwide,” she says.

Liberatha also serves as a Country Partner with the World Business Angel Investment Forum (WBAF) and a Global Goal Champion for Goals 8 and 9, promoting decent job creation, entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable industrialization. She has held roles such as Global Women Ambassador at the Manufacturing Summit in Canada and has received numerous accolades, including Young Tanzania Global Leader and East Africa Earth Champion.

Inspiring the Next Generation

At the heart of Liberatha’s work is her desire to inspire. She sees herself as a torchbearer for young Africans, especially women, who might feel daunted by environmental challenges. Through training programs and NGO partnerships, she is planting seeds of change in the next generation.

Liberatha Kawamala is not just an eco-warrior; she is a storyteller weaving together innovation, resilience, and community into a narrative of hope. Her journey reminds us that the fight for sustainability is not only about protecting the Earth but also about empowering its people.

As the sun sets over Dar es Salaam, somewhere in the heart of this bustling metropolis, Liberatha dreams of a future where waste no longer pollutes but provides, where communities thrive, and where the Earth breathes a little easier. Her story is not just hers; it is Africa’s story—a tale of transformation and a clarion call to those who dare to believe that even the smallest efforts can ignite great change.
