In a significant move to catalyze digital-led climate action across Africa and Europe, the Joint Innovation Facility (JIF) has announced a new call for proposals, offering non-dilutive grants of up to €250,000 to high-impact innovation consortia.
Targeting digital solutions that address climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, the initiative is part of the broader Africa-Europe Digital Innovation Bridge (AEDIB 2.0) under the European Union’s Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package.
Co-developed by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the European Union, the programme is implemented by GIZ and the Finnish public sector agency HAUS.
Their shared objective: to unlock the power of frontier technologies in confronting shared climate challenges, while forging deeper innovation ecosystems between the two continents.
A Platform for Scalable Climate Impact
The JIF is not simply a grant mechanism. It positions itself as a strategic accelerator aimed at mature innovation consortia capable of driving regional transformation. Selected projects will receive milestone-based funding between €5,000 and €250,000, along with structured access to mentorship, technical advisory services and strategic visibility across Europe and Africa.
The facility targets consortia comprising at least two partners, with a preference for Africa–EU collaborations or intra-African partnerships. Critically, African entities from 14 priority countries including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Rwanda must lead the proposals.
Projects should demonstrate both regional relevance and commercial viability, with a clear focus on climate-linked digital solutions using technologies such as AI, IoT and advanced data analytics.
This is a unique opportunity for innovators to scale ideas that are not only environmentally relevant but globally competitive. Through JIF, the aim is to surface scalable innovations that can serve as benchmarks for transcontinental cooperation in the digital and green economy.
Structured Support for Market Readiness
In addition to funding, JIF offers access to its Project Studio an integrated support suite that provides:
- Tailored mentorship from investors, technologists and climate entrepreneurs.
- Investment readiness toolkits.
- Technical and operational guidance.
- Strategic networking and peer-learning opportunities.
By aligning selected innovations with broader frameworks such as the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the EU–Africa Partnership, JIF is working to ensure long-term relevance and policy coherence.
Gender-Responsive, Locally Rooted Solutions in Demand
Proposals must be gender-responsive and grounded in local contexts while showing potential for scalability. The fund is particularly interested in tested digital innovations with an implementation track record or high replication potential. Teams must demonstrate technical and managerial capacity to execute ambitious, growth-driven ventures.
“This is not seed-stage funding,” the programme emphasizes. “We are looking for innovations with traction projects that are ready to grow and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable, climate-resilient future.”
Application Process and Timeline
Applications are currently open via the official JIF platform. Eligible organizations can access detailed eligibility documents and submit proposals through an online form. An upcoming information session will provide clarity on selection criteria, application requirements and success strategies. Key deadlines will be published on the platform.
A Catalyst for Africa-Europe Innovation Synergies
As climate threats escalate and the race to net zero accelerates, JIF offers a persuasive blueprint for leveraging technology and partnerships to address systemic risks. More than a funding facility, it is a call to action for innovators on both continents to co-develop solutions that are technologically sound, commercially viable and socially inclusive.
In a geopolitical environment where climate diplomacy increasingly intersects with digital development, the Joint Innovation Facility stands out as a practical model of Europe-Africa cooperation with real-world stakes and substantial capital on the table.
Entrepreneurs, innovators and climate tech leaders are urged to seize this opportunity to scale their solutions and shape the future of climate action.
