In a move that could reshape the entrepreneurial landscape in Somalia, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in partnership with the European Union and a network of local and international collaborators, has taken a significant step toward strengthening the country’s business incubation sector.

Through an in-depth international study tour, Somali incubator leaders were given a rare opportunity to engage directly with leading European innovation hubs, gaining firsthand insights into global best practices in entrepreneurship, innovation management and sustainable business development. This initiative is part of the broader EU-funded project, “Business Incubators to Support Entrepreneurship and MSME Creation in Somalia,” which aims to reinforce local incubation capacity, stimulate job creation and support the growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.

At the heart of this initiative is a strong focus on entrepreneurs, individuals who often navigate immense challenges to create economic opportunities in Somalia. By investing in the institutions that nurture these entrepreneurs, UNIDO and its partners are helping build a more robust and inclusive ecosystem where ideas can thrive and businesses can grow sustainably. For many Somali entrepreneurs, incubators are more than just spaces, they are lifelines for mentorship, skill-building, access to markets and crucial support systems that are otherwise difficult to find.

The study tour was designed with a clear purpose: to expose Somali business incubator leaders to high-impact technologies, global entrepreneurship models and the business environments that support them. During the multi-country journey, participants visited innovation hubs in Rome, Treviso and Trieste in Italy, Sežana in Slovenia and Vienna in Austria. These locations represent some of Europe’s most active ecosystems for tech, innovation and startup support.

While on the tour, Somali representatives explored critical thematic areas including agriculture innovation, climate action, artificial intelligence and the creative industries. These sectors are deeply relevant to Somalia’s economic future, with the potential to not only generate employment but also create export-worthy solutions rooted in local knowledge.

Participants engaged with peers from European incubators, exchanged ideas and explored partnership opportunities aimed at co-developing scalable, sustainable support systems for startups in Somalia. These cross-border conversations are expected to lead to long-term collaborations such as mentorship programs, shared platforms and investment connections, tools that can be transformative for emerging Somali entrepreneurs.

This global exposure was preceded by a week-long retreat at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, where the UNIDO Somalia team discussed key pillars of enterprise growth, including support for local value chains, entrepreneurship promotion, skills development, access to finance and industrial policy. The retreat offered a foundation for understanding how policy, finance and innovation infrastructure need to work in harmony to support small businesses and startups.

By exposing Somali incubators to cutting-edge knowledge and connecting them to international counterparts, UNIDO and the EU are helping create a future where Somali innovation is recognized, funded and supported, not only locally but globally. This is especially important for inclusive entrepreneurship, ensuring that youth, women and underrepresented groups are empowered to pursue their ideas and lead ventures that create impact.

Somalia’s economic resilience will depend heavily on the strength of its entrepreneurial ecosystem. Initiatives like this study tour demonstrate how intentional partnerships and exposure to global best practices can catalyze local change. Entrepreneurs in Somalia now have new pathways to international partnerships, innovation strategies and investor engagement, making them better equipped to build companies that are competitive, creative and community-centered.

The journey ahead is long but the foundation is being laid today. With sustained support and a shared vision for inclusive growth, Somali entrepreneurs are increasingly being positioned as key players in the country’s development. UNIDO, the European Union and their partners have signaled their continued commitment to supporting these changemakers as they build the businesses of tomorrow, creating jobs, inspiring innovation and rewriting Somalia’s economic future from the ground up.
