Gabriel Musafiri Mirindi’s story is one of unwavering resolve, a journey that transcends personal ambition and embraces a greater mission. Born in Kalemie, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on May 4, 1997, Gabriel’s life is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It is a story of a young man who, despite growing up amid hardship and instability, chose to build bridges of hope and opportunity for the most marginalized: refugees.
“I realized that many young refugees in Nakivale believed their future could only be built outside of Africa,” Gabriel reflects. This realization ignited a powerful desire within him to change that narrative—to show these young people that their futures could be forged within Africa, leveraging the untapped potential of technology. From humble beginnings, he has since founded the Refugees Youth Technology Initiative (RYTI), offering technological training and access to education for young refugees, laying the foundation for an empowered generation.
The Early Days: Education and Personal Growth
Gabriel’s journey toward his vision began with a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to personal growth. After completing his State Diploma in Commerce and Administration in 2016, he later enrolled for a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science specializing in Software Engineering at the University of Lake Tanganyika in Bujumbura. He was determined to build a future that not only involved academic success but also contributed to the greater good.
“My studies in computer science were the stepping stones for something much bigger,” Gabriel shares. “They were not just for my personal growth, but for the opportunity to change lives.”
Alongside his formal education, Gabriel sought out opportunities to sharpen his technical skills. He completed various specialized training courses in office computing, programming, web design, and software maintenance. These courses, from institutions like the Centre Jeunes Kamenge in Bujumbura and Now And Tomorrow Uganda, equipped him with the practical skills he would later use to launch his ambitious initiative.
A Vision for Change: The Birth of RYTI
By 2022, Gabriel’s vision was crystal clear. He founded the Refugees Youth Technology Initiative (RYTI) in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda, driven by the belief that the lack of access to technology was a major barrier for young refugees seeking opportunities. “It was painful to see these young people who felt their only chance was to leave Africa,” Gabriel recalls. “I knew there had to be another way.”
With limited resources but abundant determination, Gabriel began training young refugees and members of the host community in technology and digital skills. “The mission of RYTI is simple but profound: to empower young refugees through technology and enable them to contribute meaningfully to society,” he explains.
Starting in 2022, Gabriel and his team began providing daily technological support, establishing a Techno-Digital system that became the heartbeat of their operations. But the road to success was not without obstacles.
Challenges and Triumphs
Like many entrepreneurs, Gabriel faced a series of challenges that threatened to derail his efforts. One of the greatest obstacles was financial support. “We initially believed external funding would come quickly, but it didn’t,” Gabriel admits. “We had to adapt, and our solution was to offer a free Advanced Programming training program.”
But financial challenges were just the tip of the iceberg. Access to equipment also posed a significant hurdle. “At first, we didn’t have enough computers for everyone,” Gabriel says. “But we launched a paid Web Design training program, and the funds helped us purchase second-hand computers. It was a small victory, but it made all the difference.”
These challenges only strengthened Gabriel’s resolve. “Every beginning is difficult, but perseverance is the key to success,” he reflects. “A successful project requires personal and collective sacrifice, as well as careful and realistic planning.”
Empowering the Next Generation
One of the most impactful initiatives Gabriel is leading is the “Watoto Net” program, which focuses on teaching children in Nakivale Refugee Settlement the basics of communication through technology. Launched in January 2025, the program aims to introduce children aged 10 to 20 to the world of computers, smartphones, and the internet.
“We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made,” Gabriel says with a smile. “At the start, 98% of them had never used a computer. Now, they are proficient in communicating through computers, smartphones, and the internet.”
The Watoto Net program, set to conclude in February 2025, is a vital stepping stone in equipping these children with the tools they need for future success. “We want these kids to be ready for more advanced technology training down the line,” Gabriel explains. “This is just the beginning.”
A Legacy in the Making: Reflections on the Journey
As Gabriel reflects on the journey so far, he emphasizes the importance of leadership and empowerment. “Leadership is not just about managing people; it’s about motivating and developing the potential in others,” he says thoughtfully. “It’s about inspiring others to believe in themselves and giving them the tools to succeed.”
Gabriel’s leadership is rooted in a deep sense of responsibility, not only to the refugees and their communities but also to the larger mission of empowering marginalized populations through technology. “Living without knowledge or skills limits progress,” he states. “Our work is about providing the skills and knowledge necessary to open doors to better opportunities.”
With RYTI now thriving and continuously expanding, Gabriel is more determined than ever to ensure that young refugees no longer feel their future lies beyond Africa. “Our mission continues,” he says resolutely. “We will keep working to empower young people, strengthen the technological autonomy of refugees, and create a better future for all.”
The Road Ahead
Gabriel Musafiri Mirindi’s story is far from over. His work through the Refugees Youth Technology Initiative is transforming lives, one lesson at a time. From his humble beginnings in Kalemie to his pivotal role in empowering young refugees in Uganda, Gabriel has proven that when passion meets purpose, change is inevitable.
Looking ahead, Gabriel is focused on scaling his initiatives to reach more young people. His future projects include Excel Management, a training program aimed at empowering 100 individuals (70% women, 30% men), and a digital technology program designed to reach 1,500 vulnerable people over the next 2-3 years. Additionally, he envisions the construction of an IT training center in Nakivale to continue expanding RYTI’s reach and impact.
As he continues to expand RYTI’s reach and build new projects, Gabriel’s vision is clear: a future where refugees, and all young people, have access to the education, technology, and opportunities they need to thrive—no longer held back by borders or circumstance.
His message to aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders: “Every journey begins with a challenge, but the key to success is perseverance and belief in your mission. Keep pushing forward, and success will follow.”
Gabriel Musafiri Mirindi is not just a man changing lives through technology—he is a beacon of hope for an entire generation, lighting the way for a brighter, more connected future.
