Christian Kasukuwere’s journey began in the heart of Harare, Zimbabwe, where opportunity is often tempered by adversity. Born into a family that valued hard work and entrepreneurial thinking, he learned early that business success required both vision and persistence. While many young people in his community focused on traditional career paths, Christian was drawn to identifying gaps and solving real-world problems. His first business venture, a tuck shop in Mazowe at the age of 16, introduced him to the fundamentals of commerce and ignited a lifelong drive to create innovative solutions. Today, as the founder of ICS LP Gas Solutions, Christian is redefining access to energy in Zimbabwe and beyond, demonstrating that purposeful entrepreneurship can transform communities and industries alike.

Early Entrepreneurial Roots and Identifying Opportunity
“I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe to a hardworking business family. My parents worked hard to ensure we received a decent education whilst instilling in us the principles of hard work and entrepreneurial thinking. Growing up in such an environment, business became second nature to me, and from a young age I have always searched for new business ventures.”

Christian’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on. “My journey of entrepreneurship began in high school where I developed a key interest in Business Studies and Enterprise where I excelled immensely compared to my other subjects. This lead to me starting my very first business venture at the age of 16; a tuck shop in Mazowe, Zimbabwe. This experience gave me my first taste of buying and selling products for a profit and helped me grasp the basic fundamentals of business as well as the tenacity, drive and grit you need to possess to become successful in business.”

His instincts soon turned toward addressing real problems. Observing the persistent energy challenges in Zimbabwe, particularly frequent power outages, he recognized an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. “Zimbabwe is a land of opportunity for those who are willing to solve real problems. I quickly learned to look at the challenges around me and used them as a starting point for innovation. One of the challenges being power outages which have plagued our country since the early 2000’s.”

Leveraging his family’s involvement in the energy sector and inspired by exposure to South Africa’s gas industry, Christian deepened his expertise through conferences and networking. “During a visit to Saldanha Bay in South Africa I gained some exposure to the gas industry and met some inspiring individuals in the field. I then attended various gas conferences to deepen my knowledge on the technical and commercial aspects of the industry. These experiences cemented my vision and in 2022 I founded ICS LP Gas Solutions.”

“ICS is a company dedicated to providing more sustainable energy solutions through the national distribution of liquid petroleum gas.” ICS LP Gas Solutions now employs 30 people and provides sustainable energy solutions to households and communities across Zimbabwe. Christian’s vision extends beyond business; it is a mission to improve access to essential services while fostering economic growth.

Navigating Challenges, Scaling Impact and Innovating for the Future
Operating in Zimbabwe requires adaptability and constant learning. “Operating in Zimbabwe’s dynamic and unpredictable business landscape requires adaptability and the hunger and drive to constantly learn what is happening within the market. I have strived to continue to educate myself on how the best global entrepreneurs have excelled in their fields and draw out strategies that I can apply to my own business. As the new generation of entrepreneurs, I believe we have the responsibility to create a vision which leads our nation forward into the future.”

Christian has faced resistance from the older generation, a challenge many young entrepreneurs encounter. “As the new generation of entrepreneurs, we often face resistance from the older generation who may be hesitant to embrace new ideas and see a new vision. This is a reality faced amongst all starting to pave their way into unexplored fields.” His advice emphasizes vision and purpose: “My advice to young people pursing business is simple; have a vision and align it with a purpose you are trying to achieve. A vision will keep you dreaming and striving for more, while the purpose fuels perseverance to make your dreams a reality.”

ICS LP Gas Solutions is expanding strategically, focusing on densely populated areas most affected by the energy crisis. “We have already begun rollout of multiple gas plants and sites across Zimbabwe and into the SADC region. Our mission remains steadfast: to provide an essential reliable energy product to improve and support people’s lives.” Christian also emphasizes community development, aiming to train and employ up to 1,500 people while investing in projects for clean water access and environmental sustainability. “As ICS continues to expand, we are committed not only to business growth but also to uplifting the communities which we operate in. Our long term vision includes training and employing up to 1500 people as we develop our product line and scale up operations. We aim to look beyond energy solutions and also address other essential amenities by investing in access to clean water and projects which promote environmental sustainability in the areas we serve.”

Christian sees technological adoption as critical to ICS LP Gas Solutions’ future. “I am most excited about the rise of Artificial Intelligence, which is set to pave a new path for both renewable energy and fossil fuel markets. We have already adopted systems that assist us in the day-to-day delivery of LP gas to our consumers. We believe AI is an integral part of our business, enhancing efficiency and propelling us into a new world of possibilities globally.”

Final Reflections

Reflecting on his journey, he underscores resilience, faith and courage. “The most significant lesson I’ve learnt as an entrepreneur is that success requires the courage to try, fail and try again. Entrepreneurship is about putting fear aside and putting God in the forefront at all times. My approach in business has always been based on faith and not fear, which is important to be able to take that giant leap which often seems daunting at first. But it is in those leaps that opportunities and growth are found.”

Even limited resources, Christian notes, can sharpen entrepreneurial acumen. “Entering this field with limited resources, to the contrary, is actually more of an advantage than a setback. The smaller amounts you invest at the beginning push you to target more important elements of the industry which you can generate profit from. This sharpens ones ability to spot opportunities with the little they have, which in turn goes a long way.”

From a high school tuck shop in Mazowe to pioneering sustainable energy solutions across Zimbabwe, Christian Kasukuwere’s journey embodies determination, ingenuity and vision. He has transformed obstacles into opportunities and challenges into growth, building a business that uplifts communities, inspires young entrepreneurs and redefines the energy landscape in Africa. His story is a beacon for anyone willing to dream boldly, act decisively and embrace the unknown with faith and resilience. In Zimbabwe’s entrepreneurial heartbeat, Christian is not just a participant; he is a trailblazer, guiding the next generation toward a future brightened by sustainable solutions and boundless possibilities.
