The digital landscape is constantly evolving, many regions struggle to catch up with the pace of innovation. But in the heart of Somaliland, Mohamed Jama a young entrepreneur is determined to change the narrative. From a small town in Gabiley to the bustling city of Hargeisa, Jama’s journey into the tech world was fueled by passion, resilience, and an unyielding belief that technology could be the key to Somalia’s future. His journey blossomed into something that could empower an entire community.

“I was born and raised in Gabiley, Somaliland, and my journey into entrepreneurship was shaped by my passion for technology, media, and digital innovation,” Mohamed shares.

His path to entrepreneurship was, rooted in a deep interest in computer science, media, and communication. After completing his studies in computer science, he dove into the world of media and technology, first working as the Head of Media for the former Mayor of Gabiley and later taking on the role of Head of Media and Communication at the Gabiley Local Government. These positions, he reflects, were his first real encounters with the potential of digital platforms in shaping society.

“The power of digital platforms in shaping narratives, driving engagement, and influencing communities was something I came to understand deeply in those roles,” he says. His work illuminated a crucial gap in the digital landscape of Somaliland—a lack of specialized digital marketing and software development services. The realization was a defining moment, one that inspired him to take a bold step forward: to create a business that would address these gaps and empower local businesses.

The Birth of Halabur Hub

This vision birthed Halabur Hub, a digital marketing and software development agency based in Hargeisa. “Halabur Hub was created with a mission to empower businesses through technology and strategic branding,” Mohamed explains. Halabur Hub is bridging a significant digital transformation gap in Somaliland and the broader East African region.

“When I started, I saw an opportunity to offer tailored digital marketing, software development, and branding solutions,” Mohamed says. “The goal was clear: to create a hub where businesses could access world-class digital services without having to look abroad.”

Halabur Hub is a testament to Mohamed’s vision. The agency specializes in a wide range of services: from digital marketing and content creation to website and software development, graphic design, and tech consultancy. “We help businesses leverage the power of the internet—social media management, branding, content creation, and tech consultancy are all part of what we offer,” he explains. The team is a blend of creative professionals, developers, and marketing strategists, all committed to driving change in a region that’s just beginning to tap into its digital potential.

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Traction

But the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. “The biggest challenge has been raising awareness about the importance of digital transformation,” Mohamed admits. Many businesses in Somaliland initially viewed digital marketing as secondary to traditional forms of advertising. “It’s been a slow process of educating businesses on the value of digital solutions,” he explains. Another significant hurdle has been securing funding, as access to venture capital and tech-focused investment in the region is limited.

Despite these obstacles, Mohamed has learned vital lessons. “Resilience is key,” he says with conviction. “The entrepreneurial journey is full of ups and downs, but persistence and adaptability lead to success.” One of the critical strategies he’s adopted is leveraging partnerships. By collaborating with local businesses, international firms, and development organizations, Halabur Hub has been able to scale despite the financial challenges.

The agency’s work has already made an impact. One of Halabur Hub’s standout achievements was working on digital branding and website development for numerous businesses and institutions in Somalia. Through his team’s expertise, Halabur Hub helped organizations like Subeer Real Estate, Milano Somaliland, and Baal Company enhance their online presence and expand their reach. “Our work with these businesses has helped them grow their visibility and engagement, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of,” he says.

A Vision for the Future

Mohamed’s impact isn’t confined to business alone. He is also deeply committed to social causes. “I’m actively involved in SOHA Organization, where we focus on women’s coworking spaces, digital training for girls, and creating job opportunities for women in Somaliland,” he shares. His efforts to empower women in the tech space further underline his commitment to using his skills and resources for social good. Additionally, he’s involved with Bilow Films, a documentary initiative that seeks to preserve Somaliland’s cultural and historical heritage.

Despite the challenges, Mohamed remains optimistic about the future. “Somaliland and Africa at large have immense potential in the digital economy,” he says, his voice brimming with hope. “Through technology, innovation, and collaboration, we can create a thriving digital ecosystem that empowers businesses and communities.” This mindset has shaped not only his approach to business but also his leadership style. “Entrepreneurship is about problem-solving,” he reflects. “It’s not just about making money. It’s about understanding market gaps, providing real value, and continually innovating.”

Looking ahead, Mohamed is excited about the future. “We are expanding into the AI and content automation space,” he reveals. “AI-powered marketing tools and blockchain solutions are the future, and we want to be at the forefront of that revolution.” Halabur Hub’s upcoming projects include launching a Digital Academy to train the next generation of graphic designers, digital marketers, and tech experts in Somaliland.

His advice to entrepreneurs entering the digital space with limited resources? “Start small, but think big,” he advises. “Focus on one core service and expand as you grow. Leverage free and low-cost digital tools—there are many platforms like Canva and ChatGPT that can help you scale. Build a strong online presence and network with local business groups and international networks.”

Through it all, Mohamed Jama remains a beacon of what’s possible when passion meets purpose. His journey, from a small town in Gabiley to the digital transformation of Somaliland, is a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship is not just about creating wealth—it’s about changing lives, creating opportunities, and leaving a lasting legacy. Mohamed says, “Success comes from understanding a market gap, providing real value, and continuously innovating.” And with Halabur Hub, he’s doing just that—one digital solution at a time.
