Digital Pioneer Phillip Jonhera on Innovation, Education and Growth

The heartbeat of Harare is not its traffic or its towers but the quiet determination of individuals like Phillip Jonhera. As a digital entrepreneur and founder of Nova Digital and Upskill Academy, he has dedicated his career to closing the digital skills gap across Zimbabwe and Southern Africa. His work is grounded in practical innovation, long-term impact and a commitment to empowering others with the tools to succeed in a digital world.

What sets Phillip apart is not just his technical expertise or entrepreneurial drive but his ability to see where others don’t. While many were still grappling with the challenges of connectivity and infrastructure, Phillip focused on what could be done with what was already in place. He believed that if people could access knowledge, they could create opportunity. If young professionals were trained in digital tools, they could earn, build and scale right where they are.

From those convictions came companies that now serve hundreds, train thousands and collaborate with institutions across Southern Africa. But the journey from a curious student in Harare to a regional changemaker in digital transformation was neither easy nor guaranteed. It was a path paved by self-education and a deep belief that Africa’s future is digital and inclusive.

A Hunger to Learn, A Passion to Share

“I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, in a family that highly valued education and creativity,” Phillip says. That foundation would become the blueprint for his future. While his peers followed conventional routes, Phillip was already captivated by something different. “From a young age, I was fascinated by technology and how it could solve everyday problems.”

Though he started in local schools, his most valuable education came from a different kind of classroom, the one built by his own drive. “My educational path began in local schools and later evolved through self-driven learning and specialized training in digital marketing, business development and ICT.”

Phillip’s commitment to continuous learning became his competitive edge. “I believe my hunger to learn and adapt has been my greatest asset. I constantly upgraded my skills to stay relevant in a fast-changing digital world.” This mindset didn’t just elevate him. It ignited in him a mission to elevate others. “This foundation inspired me to empower others to embrace digital skills as a tool for transformation.”

Bridging the Digital Divide

From that conviction came two distinct but connected ventures: Nova Digital and Upskill Academy. “Starting Nova Digital and Upskill Academy came from my passion to bridge the digital skills gap I witnessed across Zimbabwe and Africa at large.”

Phillip saw a continent full of creativity but held back by a lack of access. “Many talented individuals and businesses lacked access to practical, industry-relevant digital skills and professional branding solutions.”

Nova Digital positioned itself as more than a digital agency. It became a transformation partner. “Nova Digital is a creative and digital transformation agency that provides web development, digital marketing, branding and ICT training services.” Upskill Academy, its training arm, took the mission even further. “Upskill Academy is our training arm, an online and physical skills hub offering hands-on courses in digital marketing, AI, programming and more.”

Headquartered in Harare’s CBD, both entities now serve clients across Southern Africa. “Currently, our core team consists of about 12 passionate professionals, along with a network of freelance instructors and industry collaborators.”

Riding the Digital Wave

When Phillip launched his business, Zimbabwe was still warming to digital tools. “When I began, digital adoption in Zimbabwe was quite low. Many businesses still heavily relied on traditional marketing with little understanding of how digital tools could scale their reach cost-effectively.”

But Phillip didn’t wait for the wave to come. He paddled out to meet it. As internet access grew and remote work took root, his businesses were already ready. To stay ahead, he focused on agility and relevance. “To stay ahead, I focus on three strategies: Continuous upskilling for myself and my team. Active industry networking and collaborations with thought leaders. Staying customer-centric, we adapt our services to solve real problems for businesses and individuals.”

Resilience in a Tough Market

Phillip’s success didn’t come without resistance. One of the greatest hurdles was simply changing minds. “One major challenge was building trust in digital solutions in a market where traditional methods were deeply entrenched.”

But he met skepticism with results. “Convincing clients to invest in websites, social media and digital branding required a lot of patience and tangible proof of ROI.” At the same time, he navigated Zimbabwe’s unpredictable economy. “Another was navigating economic fluctuations, which meant adjusting business models to remain sustainable while ensuring our services remained accessible.”

From these struggles, Phillip learned what most entrepreneurs must, the business world doesn’t reward those who shout the loudest but those who endure. “These experiences taught me resilience, the importance of clear communication and the power of delivering consistent value, even during tough times.”

Impact That Ripples Across Borders

Phillip does not measure success by revenue alone. He measures it in people, those he’s trained, mentored and empowered. “One highlight has been training over 1,000 students through Upskill Academy, many of whom have gone on to launch freelance careers, secure jobs or start their own businesses.”

He has helped small businesses unlock new markets. “Another proud moment was spearheading branding and digital marketing campaigns for local SMEs and seeing them expand their reach both regionally and internationally.”

And perhaps most telling of all is how he gives back at the grassroots. “Our community workshops and partnerships with schools are helping cultivate digital literacy at grassroots level, a legacy I’m very passionate about.”

Beyond Business: A Life of Purpose

Phillip is not only a CEO. He is a mentor, a community builder and a visionary. “I’m involved in youth mentorship programs through various local entrepreneurship hubs. I also collaborate with faith-based and community organizations to promote ethical digital usage and entrepreneurial mindsets.”

His ambitions continue to grow. “I’m currently developing a framework for a Digital & ICT Skills Centre that will provide affordable, hands-on training to underprivileged communities.”

This work is not a side project. It’s a reflection of how he leads. “The biggest lesson is that people are at the heart of any successful venture. No matter how great your product or idea is, nurturing genuine relationships with your team, clients and community is what drives sustainable growth.”

Advice from the Trenches

To entrepreneurs hoping to follow in his footsteps, Phillip offers pragmatic wisdom. “Start where you are with what you have. Leverage free and low-cost tools to build your online presence, social media, free website builders and basic digital marketing can take you far.”

And he’s adamant that no one should wait for permission to grow. “Don’t be afraid to learn on the go, invest in your skills consistently. Finally, collaborate with others; partnerships can multiply your impact without stretching your budget.”

Looking to the Future

Phillip is more energized than ever by where technology is going. “I’m particularly excited about the integration of Artificial Intelligence in everyday business operations, from smart content creation to data-driven decision-making.”

He’s already preparing for that future. “At Upskill Academy, we’re already embedding AI modules into our courses to prepare our students for this reality.”

His next milestone is around the corner. “We’re also planning a Digital Skills Expo later this year, which will bring together industry experts, startups and young innovators to share knowledge and opportunities.”

A Legacy Rooted in Empowerment

If Phillip Jonhera’s story teaches anything, it’s that lasting impact comes not from flashy beginnings but from purpose-driven persistence. He began with little more than curiosity and a laptop. Today, he leads one of Zimbabwe’s most forward-thinking digital companies and has trained a generation of new talent.

But even as he looks toward AI and global expansion, Phillip remains grounded in the lessons of Harare’s streets and classrooms. “This mindset has shaped me into a more empathetic, servant leader, someone who listens, empowers and leads by example.”

And that’s exactly what he’s doing, leading by example. Not just toward profits but toward purpose. Not just toward innovation but toward inclusion. Not just toward success but toward significance.
