Davids Ogan and the Success Story of MODE Digital Creations

While growing up in Rivers Sate, Nigeria, Davids Ogan vividly remembers how his mother would leave him in charge of her grocery store to give herself more time to attend to other important chores.

Looking back to those years, Davids also appreciates how the experience of running that store on numerous occasions became a learning curve about the fundamentals of running a business.

“My business interest started from an early age when I was in charge of my mum’s store. It is while I was there that I developed my money management skills and customer relations,” Davids, founder and managing director of MODE Digital Creations, recalls.

Today, as the driving force behind MODE, Davids manages a team of six full-time staff, freelancers and partners that make up a company that has so far helped over 1 000 businesses to acquire online presence by providing them with web development, hosting as well as domain registration services

MODE Digital Creations has also helped over 600 students through digital skills training – an area that Davids is particularly passionate about.

Strong academic background

Born into a large family, Davids did his primary education in Delta State, Nigeria and completed his secondary schooling in Rivers State.

“I managed to obtain my my senior school certificate and afterwards proceeded to Rivers State University of Science and Technology where I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

“I later obtained a certificate in design thinking after online studies with Harvard University and an MBA from Tekedia Institute, Bolton University, also through online studies.”

Embracing the digital age

A firm academic grounding and a solid understanding of digital technology gave Davids the skills set he needed to establish a business that would help him to help those seeking solutions aimed at helping them adopt and embrace an ever-changing technological landscape.

MODE Digital Creations has given him the ideal platform to empower others with the kind of technology, software and academic apprecaition essential for them to remain relevant by embracing the digital age.

“We are a company that provides web development, web hosting and domain registration services through our MODE Website Mortgage Scheme, where the public pays a monthly stipend for their web development, hosting and domain registration service’s needs, without having to pay the huge initial costs to get their businesses online and digital and entrepreneurship skills training.

“Our company initiated the Digital Skills Initiative Training Programme (DSITP). The initiative aims to democratize education with the audacious goal of training over 1 million school-age children and youths in the next 10 years through our mode coders club and mode digischool.

“I have been known over the years to have always said that while we were in school, our educational system taught us how to draw cockroaches, while students from other climes were learning how to draw wireframes and building many things. This anomaly, after graduation, became my driving force to redefine and democratize education by equipping the general public with vital digital skills.”

David’s desire to help spread computer literacy to as many parts of Nigeria as possible saw MODE pursuing the “Computerise Niger Delta Initiative” project.

“The project allowed us to train the general public on computer appreciation programmes using computer training centres. It was the lessons we learnt from this project and the gap in the market that motivated us to start the Digital Skills Initiative Training Programme, which is a hybrid programme (both classroom and online) to reach a larger percentage of the population.”

Strategic planning

Building on the skills he initially acquired while managing his mother’s store many years ago, David finds himself multi-tasking and delegating duties to other members of the team that makes up MODE.

“My job as managing director includes but is not limited to strategic planning, which also entails developing and executing the company’s strategic goals and vision, identifying growth opportunities and creating long-term business plans.

“I also oversee day-to-day business operations to ensure efficiency and profitability, while also monitoring and improving organizational processes and performance metrics. I approve budgets, monitor financial performance, and ensure the company’s financial health, foster relationships with shareholders, partners and other key stakeholders.”

Looking beyond challenges

The challenges that Davids has encountered while running MODE Digital Creations have not overwhelmed him. Instead, they have emboldened him to think out of the box and come up with effective and sustainable solutions.

“The biggest challenge has been the non-availability of skilled manpower and lack of funds. Over the years, we have overcome these challenges by training a pool of manpower for our business needs and also creatively generating funds through our operations.”

With Davids at the helm, MODE Digital Creations is assured of a positive growth trajectory that is also aimed to creating job opportunities for young people in Nigeria.

“Our 10-year road map is to train over 1 million youths and help them secure employment and we will eventually start our venture fund to provide seed capital for our trainees who want to start their businesses.”
