Since taking over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Baker Tilly Central Africa in 2022, Courage Matsa has been implementing his vision to drive growth and innovation, as well as expanding the business to ensure its impact is felt across the Southern African region.

Founded by Phibion Gwatidzo in 2001, Baker Tilly Central Africa offers a wide range of services, including audit and assurance, financial consulting, tax advisory, and forensic auditing. The diverse market it caters to includes listed companies, donor agencies, public enterprises, and educational institutions.

Courage believes that what sets Baker Tilly Central Africa apart from others in the same sector is its commitment to delivering innovative solutions tailored to the unique challenges of each client.

“We don’t just solve problems; we also create opportunities for growth by ensuring that our clients can navigate an ever-changing financial and regulatory landscape with confidence.”

Renowned as one of the top companies in Zimbabwe’s financial consulting sector, Baker Tilly Central Africa also has offices in Malawi, Botswana, and Zambia. Courage intends to make their plans for further regional expansion a reality in the near future.

While such an ambitious expansion drive may be easier said than done, failure is not an option for Courage.

“When I was appointed CEO of Baker Tilly Central Africa, succeeding our visionary founding partner Phibion Gwatidzo, I saw an incredible opportunity to build on his strong legacy. My decision to take on this leadership role was driven by a desire to drive growth, innovate, and expand the business’s impact across the region.

“The purpose was clear: to transform Baker Tilly into a dynamic, future-focused organization that not only provides exceptional audit and advisory services but also mentors and nurtures the next generation of business leaders. I want to inspire others to see that entrepreneurial prowess can shine even within an established business by creating new opportunities, embracing innovation, and fostering a culture of excellence.”

Over the past two years, Courage has embraced his role with enthusiasm, excitement, and optimism, qualities that have inspired the company’s employees.

“I have the privilege of steering a business with a remarkable history and an even brighter future. My responsibilities include developing and executing our regional strategy, overseeing operations in four countries – Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, and Zambia – and driving business development at Baker Tilly Central Africa.

“I also prioritize mentoring and empowering my team, ensuring that our workforce is not only skilled but inspired to achieve their full potential. A significant part of my role involves identifying and nurturing talent, equipping the next generation of leaders with the tools they need to thrive.”

As a child, starting a business was not something Courage initially considered, as his main focus was on getting good marks and excelling in school. In 2007, he completed his A-Levels at Jameson High School in Kadoma, laying a solid foundation for continuing his academic journey.

“I developed a passion for analytical thinking, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. This strong educational foundation has guided me throughout my career and set the stage for my success in the accounting and business world.

“My pursuit of higher education was driven by a desire to master my field and equip myself with the knowledge to make a difference. I studied at the University of South Africa, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting Science. I then furthered my studies and completed my Honours Bachelor of Accounting Science in 2013. I also hold a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London.

“The crowning moment of my academic journey came in 2015 when I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Zimbabwe. This achievement not only validated my hard work but also provided me with the technical expertise and credibility to lead with confidence in the dynamic field of accounting and auditing.”

His career has helped him realize that entrepreneurship is not limited to starting a business from scratch; it also involves leadership, innovation, and creating lasting value within an existing organization. By focusing on growing and transforming a business that he did not start, Courage has found the space to innovate, inspire, and provide leadership that has resulted in tangible impacts for the company, its clients, and other stakeholders.

With sights set on establishing a foothold in Namibia in 2025, Baker Tilly Central Africa is poised for further growth.

“This strategic move represents a significant step in our ambition to expand Baker Tilly Central Africa’s influence across Southern Africa. Namibia’s market presents opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, financial services, and logistics. By leveraging the lessons learned from our existing operations, we aim to make a seamless entry into this new territory while maintaining our commitment to excellence.”
