In a bold move underscoring Africa’s growing corporate ambition, Zimbabwean entrepreneur Professor. Clemence Jaricha has announced the expansion of his conglomerate, CJ Global Express Group Unlimited, into the United States with the launch of CJ Vodka Premium Spirit in Chicago.
The venture comes on the heels of a $185 million acquisition of a building in Chicago, marking one of the most high-profile international investments by a Zimbabwean-owned private group in recent years.
A Global Footprint from Africa
Headquartered in Southern Africa, CJ Global has built an expansive portfolio across 56 countries, spanning construction, mining, logistics, real estate, retail, nightlife, beauty and hospitality. Its latest move into the premium spirits sector in the US signals both diversification and global ambition.
The group’s manufacturing base will remain deeply tied to Africa, with hubs in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), Lesotho and potentially Zimbabwe. Prof Jaricha also revealed plans for developing shopping malls in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, aligning with Africa’s consumer market growth.
Africa’s Entrepreneurs Look Outward
Prof Jaricha’s announcement highlights a broader trend of African entrepreneurs extending their influence globally, building brands that compete on an international scale while drawing strength from African manufacturing and innovation.
“We’re committed to building a robust presence in the US market, with manufacturing hubs in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), Lesotho and potentially Zimbabwe. Our plans also include developing shopping malls in Zimbabwe and the Eastern Cape province,” he said.
The Conglomerate Model
CJ Global Express Group Unlimited operates a diversified empire through its divisions:
- CJ Global Mall Division
- CJ Global Construction Division
- CJ Global Beauty Spa Division
- CGEG Transport Division
- CJ Night Clubs and Restaurants Division
- CJ Global Mines Division
- CJ Global Property Division
The Vodka launch represents its eighth division and arguably its most ambitious leap into the highly competitive US consumer market.
For Zimbabwe, a country often associated with economic challenges, Prof Jaricha’s global expansion is a powerful reminder of the resilience and ambition of African entrepreneurs. By leveraging opportunities abroad while investing at home, business leaders like CJ Global are reshaping perceptions of African corporate leadership.
As Africa’s venture scene accelerates, stories like CJ Global’s provide a positive counter-narrative: one of outward-looking innovation, continental pride and the determination to build businesses that straddle continents.
