From the bustling city of Kampala, Uganda, Nadia Malker Nanteza’s entrepreneurial journey began at an impressively young age. At just 15 years old, she was exposed to the fundamentals of company structuring, shareholding, marketing, and product development through the Junior Achievers’ Young Entrepreneurs program. By 16, she had designed her first product: a juice that would later become the foundation of Lyfex’s nutritious product line. However, a lack of understanding from her caretaker forced her to put the project on hold.

“Although my idea was halted, I continued my education and pursued a diploma in Human Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics,” Nadia shares. This course allowed her to combine her passion for health with her entrepreneurial aspirations, offering flexibility not found in more rigid medical fields.

Upon completing her studies, Nadia faced a pivotal question: how to create a value-driven enterprise. Seeking practical skills, she prayed for an opportunity and landed a sales representative role at an Islamic financial startup. Despite a challenging start—closing just 19 accounts against a 30-account target in her first month—she excelled through determination and learning. Within three months, she surpassed her targets and was promoted to Customer Satisfaction Officer.

“It was in this role that I realized people’s two biggest concerns were financial and health-related. Many sought loans to pay medical bills or start businesses, and I was doing freelance nutrition consultations in my free time,” she recounts.

This dual exposure to financial and nutritional challenges planted the seeds for her groundbreaking concept, NutriFinTracy—an integration of nutrition and financial literacy.

Breaking Barriers: The Birth of Lyfex Africa

In October 2023, a life-altering accident left Nadia with a broken foot and months of recovery. During this reflective period, she asked herself: “If I could create one solution to address the world’s biggest challenges, what would it be?” Guided by her mentor, Mr. Mutebi Alawi, she combined her knowledge of nutrition and finance to establish Lyfex Africa in November 2023.

Lyfex Africa’s mission is rooted in addressing the financial and mindset barriers that hinder proper nutrition. Nadia explains, “Mindset and financial factors manifest in statements like, ‘I can’t afford to eat nutritiously,’ or ‘We’re rich; let the kids eat whatever they want.’ These insights shaped Lyfex’s unique approach.”

The company started by offering nutrition therapy services tailored to clients’ financial situations. Nadia’s vision ensured that patients with limited resources learned to maximize what they had, while wealthier clients were educated on leveraging their resources for healthier outcomes. This dual focus led to innovations like the LA-NutriFin payment platform and tele-nutrition services, launched in collaboration with Eurosat Group in 2024.

“This was such a game changer for us; it got us to easily serve our patients and reach more people, hence Lyfex Africa being profiled by the HiPipo under the 40Days40Fintechs initiative and awarded a certificate. The partnership not only helped us access IT services but also secured us a cheaper administrative office place at Eurosat House in Kawempe. Now we had a base! How do we then create serious impact, how do we serve our clients, and how do we get more people to know about us? were all real questions that had to be tackled on a daily,” Nadia shares.

Innovative Solutions for Complex Challenges

Lyfex Africa’s impact has been multifaceted. The company’s partnerships with healthcare centers—such as the Islamic University Medical Centre and Bulamu Healthcare—enable nutritionists to work in facilities without direct employment. This revenue-sharing model provides job opportunities for specialists and ensures patients receive professional nutrition care.

“We later realized that many of our patients were diagnosed with conditions like overweight, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and eating disorders, which all happen to be lifestyle diseases. We went on another quest to find out what could be the most sustainable solution to all this. One question led to another until we zeroed down to the fact that to increase the sustainability of proper nutrition habits, we needed to involve the major decision makers about food in families; who happen to be the women or the mothers in the families. Because they are the ones that normally do the budgeting, the shopping, the cooking, the serving and (the feeding of young ones) in a home, they have a relatively upper hand in influencing the nutrition status of a family,” Nadia explains.

“We then set out ourselves to uniquely focus on empowering the women and mothers to fully understand their families’ and their own nutrition journeys through nutrition education, nutrition therapy, and nutrition community clubs so they could support themselves and their loved ones make informed nutrition decisions for both short- and long-term benefits.”

“We’ve impacted over 1,000 people both directly and indirectly,” Nadia proudly notes. Lyfex’s programs also address lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol by empowering women, often the primary decision-makers in family nutrition. “Women budget, shop, cook, and feed their families. By educating and empowering them, we’re creating sustainable nutrition habits,” she explains.

Nadia elaborates further, “I am passionate about empowering women to make nutrition-centered decisions that enhance the health of their families. Through Lyfex Africa, I provide tailored nutrition therapy plans, family health programs, and culturally relevant resources to support women as advocates for lasting wellness in their homes and communities. My mission is to create a ripple effect of health across communities by positioning women as key advocates for family nutrition, helping them promote sustainable habits that span generations.”

With a focus on family nutrition education, tailored health programs, and community engagement, Nadia strives to make Lyfex Africa a trusted partner for women across Africa. “Join me in building healthier communities, one family at a time,” she adds.

The company’s efforts extend to building a community through platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, and X. Their Lyfex Care Community fosters peer-to-peer support and promotes the Ubuntu spirit in health care.

Challenges and Triumphs

Despite its successes, Lyfex Africa faces challenges, particularly the public’s limited understanding of nutritionists’ roles. Nadia’s strategy is collaboration and education. “We work daily to show the value of using nutrition specialists, partnering with ecosystem players to create awareness,” she says. Financial constraints have also been a hurdle. Securing funding for essential technology, such as their Lyfex CRM system, was particularly challenging. However, Nadia’s partnership with Eurosat Group provided IT services, administrative space, and technological advancements that enhanced data collection and patient care.

The lack of initial acceptance for nutritionists in health facilities was another obstacle. “Many health centers weren’t willing to employ nutrition specialists,” Nadia recalls. To overcome this, Lyfex implemented a revenue-sharing partnership model, opening doors for unemployed nutritionists and ensuring that patients received proper care. Triumphs like being recognized under HiPipo’s 40Days40Fintechs initiative and impacting over 1,000 individuals underscore the effectiveness of Nadia’s approach. Her resilience and ability to pivot strategies have been pivotal to Lyfex’s growth.

Lessons and Future Aspirations

Nadia’s journey has taught her invaluable lessons. “Don’t change the vision, but flex on the strategy. Your business must reinvent itself to create problem-fit solutions,” she advises. She also emphasizes patience and faith in eventual success.

Looking ahead, she is excited about government policies mandating nutritionists in public health centers and innovations like real-time nutrition data systems. “These developments not only promote good health but also create market opportunities,” she says.

A Legacy in the Making

Nadia Malker Nanteza’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and impact. Through Lyfex Africa, she is transforming lives by addressing the intertwined challenges of nutrition and finance. To aspiring entrepreneurs, she offers a heartfelt reminder: “You are needed for the growth of this continent. Save lives, but also learn to save your enterprise.” With her unwavering dedication, Nadia is not just building a business but leaving a legacy that inspires a healthier, more informed future for all.
