Led by Elias Omondi, Principal, Innovation for Resilience at FSD Africa, the summit highlighted startups that are not only innovating but also building scalable models for sustainable impact. By nurturing these startups, BimaLab is creating a stronger, more inclusive insurance ecosystem that benefits insurers, banks, communities and vulnerable populations alike.
This initiative is more than recognition; it is a catalyst for growth. By supporting these startups, BimaLab is helping to build infrastructure, tools and services that expand access to insurance, improve healthcare delivery, protect vulnerable communities and strengthen climate resilience. The 2025 cohort demonstrates how innovative technology can drive financial inclusion and social impact while supporting sustainable business growth.
Celebrating Excellence and Innovation
The top performers of the BimaLab 2025 cohort showcase the diversity and potential of Africa’s insurtech ecosystem. This year’s winners are tackling critical challenges with practical, scalable solutions.
First place went to Agrails from Kenya. Agrails provides an AI-powered platform that transforms complex climate data into actionable risk intelligence. Its API-first platform allows insurers and banks to price risk accurately, automate payouts and verify impact in real time. By reducing operational costs by over 70% and cutting payout times from months to minutes, Agrails is already supporting over $750 million in insured assets and 4 million users. The startup serves insurers entering new markets, banks lending in climate-vulnerable regions and carbon developers seeking reliable, auditable data for nature-based carbon credits.
Second place was awarded to ZimbosAbantu Healthcare on Wheels from Zimbabwe. This social innovation deploys locally built mobile clinics combining telemedicine, medical internet-of-things technology and renewable energy. By offering mobile healthcare services anywhere and anytime, ZimbosAbantu addresses critical gaps in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, providing accessible and affordable primary care.
Third place went to Insure Platform from South Africa. This platform helps insurance brokers maintain data accuracy and compliance, enhancing cash flow and business growth without requiring additional capital. Its software-as-a-service solution and white-label client management portal streamline operations for brokers while supporting both web and mobile access.
In addition to the top three, the cohort featured remarkable contributions in gender and social inclusion. The Gender Inclusion Award went to Sammanté Santé from Senegal. Sammanté provides digital health vouchers that simplify healthcare access and management, ensuring essential care reaches all individuals. The People’s Choice Award recognized HealthFlow from Morocco, a platform improving transparency and efficiency across private healthcare insurance through streamlined claims processing and better collaboration among policyholders, providers and regulators.
Driving Africa’s Insurance Transformation
The startups in the BimaLab 2025 cohort reflect four key thematic areas shaping Africa’s insurance landscape: health insurance innovation, digital platforms and embedded solutions, protection for MSMEs and informal workers and agriculture and climate resilience. These areas are critical for building a more inclusive and sustainable financial ecosystem on the continent.
By supporting these ventures, BimaLab is enabling startups to scale proven solutions, attract investment and drive social and economic impact. Representatives from all 35 companies were recognized during the summit, a moment that highlighted the collective contributions of the cohort and the tangible benefits their solutions provide.
Applause and celebration marked not only the achievements of individual startups but also the growing strength of Africa’s insurtech ecosystem.
