John Nyagwencha, CEO of Aqua Clara Kenya (ACK), has been selected to join the prestigious Reckitt Catalyst 2025 global cohort of entrepreneurs. This recognition is more than an accolade; it reflects a growing belief that local solutions, when nurtured and scaled, can create lasting global impact. Catalyst provides not just funding but mentorship, access to a worldwide network and guidance that helps entrepreneurs turn vision into tangible social and economic change. For John and ACK, this opportunity strengthens their mission to deliver affordable, sustainable access to safe drinking water for communities across East Africa and beyond.

Access to safe drinking water remains a pressing challenge across Africa, affecting health, education and economic development. This challenge inspired the founding of Aqua Clara Kenya (ACK) in 2009, a social enterprise dedicated to improving water access through simple, affordable and effective technologies. Since its establishment, ACK has provided over 300,000 people with safe drinking water, demonstrating the power of market-based solutions to meet critical needs while empowering local communities. Its vision is clear: an Africa where everyone has access to safe drinking water. Its mission focuses on building local capacity, providing effective solutions and implementing sustainable approaches that can transform communities.

Building on the work of ACK, John co-founded Aqua Clara Solutions in 2022 as the for-profit arm of the organization. ACS was designed to commercialize proven water technologies and deliver scalable, market-driven solutions to households and institutions across Africa. Since its founding, ACS has become a model for how social missions can be combined with business discipline to create lasting impact.

From the beginning, John has led ACS from idea to implementation. He built the company’s vision, assembled a capable team and shaped a go-to-market strategy that lays the foundation for long-term growth. In 2023, ACS secured its first strategic investment from Danone Communities, a milestone that enabled the company to expand its operations. By 2024, ACS launched manufacturing and distribution for high-impact, affordable WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) products, making safe water solutions accessible to more households and institutions. The company continues to develop strategic partnerships with local distributors, institutions and NGOs to drive reach and scale, ensuring that its products reach the communities that need them most.

ACS is redefining how water solutions are delivered to underserved markets. The approach blends commercial viability with social purpose, showing that businesses can address fundamental needs while remaining sustainable. By leveraging the lessons and technologies developed by ACK, ACS has been able to expand its impact rapidly while maintaining affordability and quality. Each new product distributed represents not just access to water but improved health, productivity and opportunity for the communities it serves.

The inclusion of John in the Reckitt Catalyst 2025 cohort is a recognition of both leadership and innovation. Catalyst provides mentorship and global connections that will help ACS refine strategies, access new resources and expand its solutions to reach even more communities. For John and his team, this opportunity is not just an accolade. It is a step toward increasing the scale and effectiveness of their work across Africa and beyond.

The impact of ACS and ACK goes far beyond technology. By enabling access to safe drinking water, they empower communities, improve public health and build local capacity. Their work strengthens partnerships between the private sector, NGOs and local institutions, creating a model for sustainable development that others can replicate. Through this approach, safe water becomes more than a basic necessity. It becomes a driver of economic growth, social stability and opportunity.

John’s leadership exemplifies how dedication and collaboration can transform lives. By focusing on scalable solutions, investing in partnerships and integrating a social mission with business discipline, ACS is demonstrating that African entrepreneurs can create solutions that are both locally rooted and globally relevant. The work of John Nyagwencha and his team is proof that tackling basic human challenges can generate long-lasting social and economic benefits.

As ACS moves forward, its goal remains clear: to ensure that safe drinking water is accessible to every household and institution in Africa. The company’s work, now amplified by the Reckitt Catalyst program, will continue to reach more people and inspire other entrepreneurs to address critical challenges with practical, sustainable solutions.
