In a world increasingly grappling with mental health challenges, Akili Space has emerged as a pioneering force in Kenya. Founded in May 2024, this social impact initiative is dedicated to promoting mental wellness among adolescents, teenagers, and young adults. With a clear mission to bridge the gap in accessible, youth-centered mental health services, Akili Space is reshaping the mental health landscape in the region.

The organization operates with a passionate team of eight and a thriving community of over 200 young people. Its headquarters in Kenya serves as the hub for a wide range of programs, including mental health workshops, therapy and counseling sessions, mentorship initiatives, and tailored support for marginalized groups. “Our work is about creating safe spaces for young people to address emotional and practical challenges constructively,” explains founder Osano Brian.

One of Akili Space’s hallmark initiatives is the Juvenile Wellness Program, which provides psychosocial support and correctional counseling to young offenders in juvenile centers. This program not only addresses the mental and emotional needs of these individuals but also equips them with tools for successful reintegration into society. Sessions focusing on self-awareness, emotional resilience, and conflict resolution have already transformed many lives. Recently, engaging elements such as interactive activities and targeted case reviews have been added to enhance its impact.

In tandem with this, the Legal Wellness Program empowers young offenders by educating them about their rights and basic legal processes. “We realized many young people in these situations lack understanding of their rights or how to navigate legal systems. Providing them with this knowledge fosters confidence and hope,” shares Brian. This initiative has become a cornerstone of Akili Space’s work, offering tangible pathways to rehabilitation and empowerment.

Beyond juvenile programs, Akili Space actively engages with communities in slum areas where mental health challenges are often compounded by poverty and stigma. Through workshops and community outreach, the organization tackles issues such as trauma, substance abuse, and peer pressure. These sessions are designed to foster open dialogue and provide essential support, helping to create a culture of understanding and healing.

Akili Space also leverages technology to expand its reach. From virtual webinars to online mental health resources, the organization ensures its services are accessible to a broader audience. “The awareness of mental health issues has grown significantly in recent years, and we’ve adapted by integrating technology into our programs,” says Brian. This forward-thinking approach has allowed the organization to remain relevant and impactful in an ever-changing landscape.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. Operating largely on a pro bono basis, Akili Space has had to navigate financial constraints while meeting the demand for its impactful programming. Brian attributes the organization’s resilience to strong partnerships and community support. Collaborations with schools, churches, and like-minded organizations have been instrumental in amplifying Akili Space’s reach and effectiveness.

About the Man Behind Akili Space

Osano Brian’s passion for mental health stems from personal experience.“I’ve always had a passion for mental health, having had a lived experience with it myself,” he shares. His journey began during his university days, where he became a vocal advocate for mental health, educating young people and launching initiatives aimed at building supportive communities. “The pressure young people face today is immense, and I wanted to create environments where they could thrive together,” he reflects.

The idea for Akili Space took root shortly after Brian graduated from university. Witnessing the stigma and lack of resources surrounding mental health in Kenya, he was driven by a “deep-seated desire to address the silent struggles of adolescents and young adults.” His firsthand observations of insecurities, peer pressure, and emotional health challenges among young people highlighted the urgent need for accessible support systems.

Brian’s journey has been marked by significant milestones, including the successful launch of Akili Space and its flagship programs. Collaborating with juvenile prisons to provide psychosocial support, conducting seminars on suicide prevention, and establishing partnerships with various institutions have all been noteworthy achievements. “Every success reminds me why I started this journey,” he says.

Yet, the path has been fraught with obstacles. Balancing financial limitations with the demand for impactful programming has tested his resilience. “Resource constraints have been one of the biggest challenges, but leveraging partnerships and community support has helped us overcome them,” Brian explains. Changing mindsets around mental health has been another hurdle, requiring persistence and a steadfast commitment to the mission.

Reflecting on his journey, Brian emphasizes the importance of purpose. “Purpose sustains passion,” he asserts. “There have been times when setbacks made me question whether to continue, but remembering why I started has always kept me going.” He believes that leadership is about continuous learning, humility, and resilience—qualities that have been indispensable in his work.

Looking ahead, Brian is excited about the potential of integrating technology into mental health services. From virtual counseling to gamified learning tools tailored to the African context, the possibilities are vast. Upcoming projects, such as an expanded juvenile wellness program with enhanced psychosocial support, signal Akili Space’s commitment to growth and innovation.

Brian’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is clear: “Start small but dream big. Focus on building strong relationships and partnerships. Understand your audience and design programs that truly meet their needs.” Above all, he highlights the power of storytelling: “Sharing your journey and impact can attract support from unexpected places.”

With a steadfast commitment to its mission and a leader driven by passion and purpose, Akili Space continues to shine as a beacon of hope for young people in Kenya.
